Another question, geek oracle. STILL workin' on it ...

Hi Jerry!

The config.sys is just a text file and you can open it with notepad or similar, or just mail me it as it is, if the runtime error returns.

Im glad if I was to any help.

After this, you will be known as “Jerry the computer wizz”. So, welcome to the International Geek Brotherhood (IGB)

Have a Happy New Year!

Cheers!

Funny thing, Jerry…my nephew was complaining about his sluggish computer last night, so I went over and downloaded Ad-Aware and Spybot to his system. Ad-Aware alone discovered over 2500 spyware trackers and hijackers hiding in his system. That must be a record! Luckily, we discovered that all the boxes could be checked with one click (right click for “remove all” and left for removing).

He had AVG virus protection, but AVG couldn’t remove any of the trojans–at least the ones ‘embedded’ in his system. We found a way to get them off though by reading serveral different forums regarding the viruses. We had to disable “system recovery” to get rid of them. Here’s the AVG link to the forum that explains why and how it works. It’s titled: HOW TO CLEAN AN INFECTED COMPUTER - by Moderator

I see they have a thread “about:blank” removal too.

Everything’s still fine.

I think we got it.

As the ultimate test, I deleted the software for my scanner, which hadn’t worked in many months and has always been the most cantankerous part of the setup, reinstalled the scanner software, and fired up the scanner again. Works fine (see the “Whistle Prototype” thread).

Best wishes,
Jerry

One computer at my school had a 3800+ adaware count in one go.

(One of my geekier friends has a habit of installing adaware somewhere deep in a windows directory and making a folder for it called something important-sounding like “kbnet” and then running it whenever he gets a chance.)
