An Olwell is born . . .

Well, I thought about doing an homage to Chris Laughlin, but it just wasn’t working for me. The light was wrong, and all. Oh, and I’m not a good photographer. Blah blah.

Just thought I’d share some images of the object of my own desire, my own flute grail . . . it’s been, oh, what, 9ish years in the making? Well, probably didn’t take that long to make, but the wait was that long.

This is my keyed Olwell. It’s his nach Nicholson, for lack of a better term; the medium-ish holed variety. Single-piece middle section because Pat had found a piece of timber he thought would work well for the midjoint. It’s flamed/curly boxwood, silver keys and slide, and it has mammoth ivory rings. Fully-lined headjoint. Mmmmmm.

First, the whole shebang.

A closeup of the barrel section, showing the two ring styles (the slide is set off with simple rings, the others are more decorative), and a little more of the curliness.

A look at the headjoint.

And, the serial number. I think it’s on the back of the headjoint because the thickness of the ivory rings precluded its being on the endgrain. Or, maybe Pat’s putting them out for all to see now.

I’ve updated my avatar with a shot of the maker’s name and the footjoint ring. Yes, it plays as nicely as it looks. I played it for 45 minutes yesterday without realizing it.

Sigh. I knew if I started talking about it, people would bug me about images. Yes, yes, I ought to make a sound clip. I know.

Stuart

Stuart,

Congratulations! That is one beautiful flute. (Yes, that’s drooling you hear in the background).

Erik

vewwy sexy

Elegance without ostentation. I like it!

man! you are so lucky !!!

Mmmmmm Olwell.

Beautiful Stuart, now lets here it!

Oh my frickin’ god!!! :astonished: That flute is drop dead gorgeous Stuart!!

Very Pretty, Stuart!

So, what are you going to name him? How about Little Ollie, or is this your firstborn; Little Stewie?

I like the flaming in the wood!

Yes, we do want to hear it, how about a little of Loretto Reid’s ‘Leon’s Waltz’? Thanks, you’re the guy!

Good on you Stu!

I’m on the list too. Only six years to go!

Patrick

Beautiful Flute, beautiful materials and Beautiful craftsmanship.
I think that Alan summed it up perfectly-it has great grace of form, allowing the full beauty of the materials to shine.
I’m sure that it sounds as good as it looks.

Wow! What a beauty!

Now, if we can all arrange to get together sometime soon, maybe you’ll let some of us plebians hold it…

M

What’s the deal with the mammoth ivory rings? Are they one of Pat’s standard offerings, or were they a one-off?

I had thaught that mammoth rings were much bigger !
Very nice.
Using Mammoth avoids risks to all those endangered old ivory billiard balls !
.

Yo, dat’s da bomb Stu dawg.

Loren

Wow, nice flute Mr.

I don’t know if it’s an optical illusion, but the mouth hole looks positively cavernous. I have never seen, much less played an Olwell, so I am curious as to whether this is his standard mouth hole. Perhaps you could give it a quick measure and let us know how it might compare with others.

Graham

Graham . . .

Wow, it does look big in those pictures. It’s not, though. I can measure it at home.

How big would you say “normal” is?

Stuart

less then 12mm and around the 10.5mm.

I can’t measure it while I’m at work, but to answer the part of your question that I can answer, Graham, it’s basically his standard mouth hole. I think he varies little details, but by and large the design is consistent.

I have an embouchure shot of an Olwell from the flute porn page:

They are, top to bottom, a Byrne, an Olwell, and a Grinter. I do know that the Olwell embouchure on that flute is really REALLY similar to the one on the boxwood flute. It could just be an optical illusion, as you say, that makes it look so ginormous.
