I did a search for this topic but found none, so here goes.
A friend of mine Jason out in the Arizona Piper’s Club has been in contact with an older gentleman who is looking to sell a McNulty (he thinks) 1/2 set in Aluminum. (see his description below) Kirk Lynch confirms he worked on them, and that the regs are now owned by a member of this forum, Kevin Reitmann. Does anyone know anything about the pipes, have images (Kevin?) or anything. They sound very interesting:
I saw a weird set of pipes yesterday by McNulty that a guy was offering for sale down here in Sun City. I think this maker was retired and made pipes in Scotland for a while. The set was made of aluminum and was a half set! The drones were all aluminum pipes with blackwood or ebony cores. They reminded me of Felix Doran’s pipes in character, but they sure did not look like a Rowsome set. The guy bought them from a catalog a long time ago. He had Kirk Lynch reed them about 10 or 15 years ago. The set played well and was in tune to my surprise. The guy said they would not play and needed new reeds. I put one of Kirk’s reeds in and put tape on the key holes and the set played great. The drones were a bit loud, but were still good. The old guy sold the regulators to the set to a guy in Kansas I think a long time ago. I wish I had some pictures of the set. I think he wants about $800 for the set. It was a really weird set of pipes.
from Kirk:
Wish I could remember the guys’ name that owned those, but can’t at the moment. He used to show up about ever 2 years and I’d go over the things again and then they’d go back in a box - never did get to the point of being able to play. I made a new mainstock for the things at one point so he could just play the half set and he sold the regs to Kevin Reittman. The stop switch on the old mainstock never did work right, but the chanter really was not that bad and the drones were OK too. Maybe the old guy retired to Florida- I don’t know- haven’t heard from him in several years and he got re- married a few years ago, so maybe he and the new wife went to Florida.
