I’m thinking about buying a Burke (secondhand) D Session with the black Delrin tip. Question : how do the air requirements of this compare with the narrow bore one ? I know it’s louder so I guess it would need more air.
I currently play a Susato D and that’s fine, I have enough puff to blow it. I also play an Alba Q1 (non tunable) and that one requires less breath… I tried a GFM and found it quite hard on the lungs. So what would you advise : the Session Burke or the Narrow Bore ?
If you can play a Susato you can play a Burke. I had both the Burke session and narrow-bore at one time and don’t remember much if any difference in the wind requirements. The Burke high whistles are some of the easiest-playing out there.
I got a Burke session D and I was expecting it to take a lot of air or be really loud- no such thing! It’s very sweet-playing actually and has moderate wind requirements. I have an old Susato high D which is VERY loud and takes more air than the Burke. That Susato is not for subtle playing, it’s a blaster, only to be used in very noisy environments.
Now the Burke low D does take rather more wind than many of the other low D’s I’ve played. This is probably due to it having a considerably larger bore. The payoff is the large volume, in particular a very strong bottom D.
I have the big-bore Burke C (high, not low) and it too is a sweet player.
