Air escaping

Recently I’ve found that my fingers have started to relax. But I’ve also noticed that there seems to be air escaping from some of the holes when I’m playing.I don’t think this should be happening.Have I relaxed too much?
And no I don’t smoke

It is common for someone new to the pipes to experience leakage from their fingers. A good way to help stop this is to use a mild hand lotion, or, what I do is rub a little perspiration from my forehead, back of the neck, behind the ears… onto my fingers. Works like a charm.

Continue to keep your fingers relaxed. Eventually, you will find the right finger pressure to seal the holes without falling into the ‘death grip’.

Keep at it.

This can be truly frustrating. Check the edges of your fingers for tiny holes. You’d be surprised just how much air can escape through even a pin-sized hole in your finger. Use a bicycle tire repair kit to patch up your fingers. Move your fingers around until they are covering the tone holes properly. This really has to do with body memory - i.e. it must become a physical habit to cover the holes completely, and the only way to get there is through constant repetition. And don’t despair. Listen to live recordings of experienced players and you will notice how often they make the odd squeek - from not covering a hole completely. You are not alone.

The hands tend to assume the same position with relation to the chanter after a while. It becomes second nature. Have you been adjusting the reed/taking off the chanter top and replacing it in a slightly different position? This would be enough to cause air leaks, especially if you are playing in a more relaxed way.
