from the moment I switch my drones on, I have to pump the bellows as if I was pumping a sleeping matrass…sounds familiar to you? Is there a way to remedy this and make them less air consuming and less fatiguing?

Sounds to me like you may have a leak somewhere. You shouldn’t have to pump that hard just to keep the drones and chanter playing. That, or your drone reeds may be too open. Does your set have regulators as well? Have you checked the joint of the drones (where they meet the valve stock) to see if you have enough hemp wrapped around them?
Just to add to what Joseph said, check to make sure that the reeds are firmly seated in the drones. Playing with the drones on isn’t supposed to be an aerobic workout.
