advice about shipping flutes

I’m sending a flute from northern California to Alabama, and was wondering about what kind of precautions I should take against any potential temperature/humidity fluctuations enroute. At this time of year the temperature issue probably isn’t enough to worry about, but I’m thinking more about humidity differences. What do you all do when you send flutes across country (or oceans, for that matter)? It’s a Casey Burns flute that will be in a velvet-lined wooden box. Thanks for any advice!

Hi,
Shrink wrap each piece and that should seal it up.
ship USPS Priority Mail insured, it will get there in 2 to 3 days.

I put the flute in a Ziploc bag to help alleviate any humidity fluctuations. I also try to get it there quick – 2-3 day shipping for the US. The most important thing is to pack it well. If it’s in a case, it shouldn’t have any problems.

I’ve sent or received dozens of flutes and wooden whistles. The only problem I ever had was a whistle that warped, both on the way to and from me. That was nothing that a day in the humidifier couldn’t handle, though.

Most makers from whom I’ve received flutes don’t take any special precautions against the flute drying out, but they do try to get the flute delivered quickly.
