Absolute Beginner

I had a notion 2 nights ago, to learn the Tin Whistle. I’ve been following an Irish band [in Scotland…] for quite a while now and they have a whistle player - and I love the sound of it.

I went out and bought one today. And I have no idea where to start!
Any chance someone could point me in the direction of websites, hints, music etc etc?

Thanks a lot

For CDs, (assuming you want to learn to play Irish Music) I would recommend starting with Mary Bergin’s Feadoga Stain CDs. Both of them are absolutely fantastic and totally faithful to traditional Irish Music. I don’t think it is much of a stretch to claim that Mary Bergin’s playing is the standard by which most other whistle players are judged. Also Tin Whistles by Sean Potts and Paddy Maloney, also Joanie Madden’s Songs of the Irish Whistle CDs.

For learning resources, www.whistlethis.com and www.tradlessons.com.

Hope that helps as a start.

Brother Steve’s pages are good for beginners too, i think the link is

but i can’t check it as my internet is highly filtered and is either blocking it or the site is down.

Hi Clare

If you are starting tin whistle and are in Glasgow, then why not get taught properly here.

Dere ain’t crap for learnin’ whistle round dese parts… (spoken in the vernacular of my area…)

David, you’re a star!
I had a quick look earlier on for places I could learn but I obviously didn’t look very hard!

Rats! In a couple of weeks he’s gonna be better than me.

Welcome aboard!

How many “he”'s do you know called Clare? :stuck_out_tongue:

The name may have come from the county in Ireland… Not unheard of.

That’s where my name came from - but I’ve never met a guy called Clare, I’ll take your word for it though

Arrrrgh! Welcome aboard matey *[Clare__x. Fetch a mug of rum for our new member, 'iggins. Lively, now!

You do know that the tin whistle is a gateway drug to uilleann bagpipes, right?

Do a search for RyanDunsSJ on youtube.

For example:

I’d never met a guy called “Patsy” until I cam here, either …

A big Welcome!

I jsut started playing the whistle about 6 weeks (when I bought my first one (mind you I said “Fist One”)

This is a wonderful group of people here that will always be more then willing to help you out.

Have you any other musical experience or is this the first instrument you’ve played?

I played the Clarinet for a good few years - not really sure why I gave that up to be honest, regret it now really.
I also had a brief affair with a guitar - but it didn’t last

Welcome! I’m a complete beginner as well. You are at an advantage over me having played clarinet. I notice a number of people who play whistle had played clarinet in school. Here are the things that have helped me thus far.

Tablature Karaoke - a freeware program that transposes midi files into graphics of which note to play. There’s also ABCNavigator (and a host of other equivalents) for transposing ABC notation into sheet music if you prefer that.

YouTube - check out the videos in the YouTube Whistle Players group. http://www.youtube.com/group/whistle There are currently around 675 videos featuring whistles, and more get added every day.

TheSession.org for tunes

And everyone says to go to a local session. You should have plenty of opportunities! I haven’t had the opportunity to yet, but look forward to doing so.

What type of whistle did you buy?

I bought a Clarke Original Penny Whistle. [Yes, I read that off the box]. It’s a D though, the woman in the shop asked me whether I wanted a C or D, and I had a funny feeling I’d read online that D was the most common.

I’ve had a wee go at it tonight [for want of a better term!] and I really like it

Cool! That’s my absolute fave whistle! You should have bought both, though. I usually buy 4-6 at a time as I have a tendency to end up with quite a few “bananna whistles” after a few weeks/months.

Painted or plain?

Both? I’m an unemployed student and they were £8 each

Uhm…it’s black with gold diamond shapes on it…
