'A' Whistles

Can anyone recommend a good soprano ‘A’ whistle. I don’t want to spend a fortune but would like something I can play is sessions.

Even though I have played the whistle for longer than I can remember, I still can not master playing in the key of ‘A’ on a ‘D’ whistle. It probably has something to do with the way I learned. I have no problem playing ‘A’ tunes on an ‘A’ whistle.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Water Weasels are great in A, but I haven’t played many other kinds of A whistles, so there may be others out there that are just as good.

Most session tunes in A can be played on a soprano E. I’ve got a Susato that’s pretty good and also inexpensive; you might try one.

Tony Dixon makes a nice tunable mezzo-soprano A for about $38 at The Whistle Shop.

It’s a little quiet and might need miking in a session but has a sweet sound.

I just bought one last week. They are in stock and delivered in about 5 days or less.

I would recommend the Water Weasel. Philo

Another vote for the WW. It has ample volume without being obnoxious, moderate breath requirements, and a sound that’s plenty chiffy – almost a low-whistle sound. It’s moderately priced, at about $75.

One of favorite whistles is my Burke composite A. It is really nice. I also like the water weasel as mentioned previously. The Overton is also nice. I haven’t had a Dixon A but the Bflat I did have had a good sound, the G just didn’t do much for me, so if the Dixon A is like the Bflat, it would get my vote; if it’s like the Dixon G, I would pass.
