A Question For You Brits

How do you prepare crumpets?

I tried some recently, and I think they’re very good plain, but I figure most people put some sort of spread on them.

I’m not a Brit but I’m familiar with crumpets.

Some people toast them on both sides but I prefer them toasted only on top. As for toppings, butter is enough if you are a serious crumpet fan. But if that’s not good enough, butter and honey are fine. You might substitute jam for honey but I don’t recommend it.

If you only toast the top, the crumpet absorbs the topping. Delicious.

I thought you had to go hunting for it

Isn’t that somewhat like an English muffin? I think they’re sold at Trader Joe’s.

I’m had some familiarity with STRUMPETS in my youth while in the army, and many a nights in the mess we toasted the strumpets that we knew.

I’m no Brit, either, but I’ve read a little about them. They arn’t really like English muffins, which arn’t English. You can find recipe for them on the web if you like, though, or you can find them in Publix supermarkets, last time I looked. To make them you have to have crumpet rings. I think you can find something similar in this country meant to shape and cook eggs or pancakes.

I always have meant to try a recipe at home, but havn’t yet.

You slice your crumpet in half, place a kipper on one half, replace the other half and there you go!

P.S. You can add chocolat sauce to taste if you like.

:boggle:  :stuck_out_tongue:

I thought there was some insanely wonderful substance called Devonshire cream or maybe clotted cream that you put on crumpets. But maybe you put it on something else. And you would put jam on as well. I fantasize about eating Devonshire cream and it is so sad that I have never had it, just read about it.

That’s scones you’re thinking of Cynth. And you have them with strawberry jam as well as with cream. You have them for afternoon tea and you drink ..er .. tea.

Some have to hunt for crumpet Peter. Others are just crumpet magnets. :sunglasses:

Ahh, I can tell you have class. That’s exactly where I got them. Trader Joe’s is the most bestest grocery store in the world!

One time someone showed up at a local ITM session with a trumpet. He left with a crumpet.

And exactly where was the crumpet placed?

It’s scones for me then. Man that sounds good.

I’ve never tried the devonshire cream, but I have tried that lemon and orange curd they eat over there. I can’t believe it’s not popular here.

Yeah, why would anybody want a crumpet when you could have a scone…with clotted cream…mmmmmmmmmmmm…n fresh strawberries…or strawberry preserves…

Man, I miss Devon. On vacation, we were averaging two cream teas a day…You have to drive to the next village but who cares…

Well, we were raised on peanut butter and Welch’s grape jelly and we are truly a very deprived people in my opinion.

I don’t want to know. :stuck_out_tongue:

Scones and cream for afternoon tea Weeks, crumpets (and tea) for supper. Everything in its place and a place for (almost) everything.

The place for fish fingers is the rubbish bin.

I have more than a faint suspicion that you are the only one so far who does.

I’m not a Brit but what about either black currant jam or Lyle’s Golden Syrup?

the gooseberry jam is good too. Trader Joe’s has a good Blueberry jam; (I like the non-organic version better.)
