I got one of these, it comes from Vietnam.
Iโ€™m happy to sell it!

Very cool! Hard to believe all that is coming out of one instrument.

Looks like a Laotian / SE Asian variant of the Chinese sheng:

Apparently, Christopher Adler is located here in San Diego. Who knew?

The instrument is called kaen and it is primarily from Laos and Thailand, not Vietnam. I have a dozen or so of them and also use them for ITM, all though this guy can rock Irish music, Iโ€™m better at more the traditional Tha/Lao stuff. They basically are a 2 octave diatonic scale instrument. Iโ€™ve taken my D(Bm) kaen gao(has 18 tubes instead of 16) to sessions with interesting results. They are a fun instrument, but itโ€™s hard to find good ones, often the reeds break within weeks on the cheap ones, and the kisoot dries out in no time.

Hereโ€™s a pic of my two favorite kaen, again both of these are kaen gao, which has 18 tubes instead of 16. The big one is C(Am), and the smaller of the two is F(Dm).

how does this thing work? are you blowing into it and putting air through all pipes at the same time? Is that how you get that drone sound?
I hyperventilate just listening to this guy? Heโ€™s circular breathing to keep the continuous tone, right?

I was so inspired by this cat I learned 2 of the 3 jigs and posted a reply - Iโ€™m learning Boys on the Town so I can play this jig set as well.

This instrument is mentioned in the Old Testement โ€“
Ted

And since when has Atol Highlander [sic] been a jig?
