I´m flying out next Tuesday for Ireland to follow my roots and listen to how the music is actually suppost to be played. So I was wondering if you guys could give me a couple of pub recommendations and places to go to hear the various county and playing styles of Ireland. I´m flying into Dublin and I will stay a day or two there, and then I will head south in a halfcircle of Waterford, Cork, Kerry, and up to Miltown Malbay for Willy Week. Then after that I believe I´m heading up to Tubbercurry to the South Sligo School. And then after that I´m heading back overland to Dublin for my return flight on the 22nd of July. I´m going to try to make it up to Donegal if I can but that seems doubtful. So there is my very ¨rough¨travel plan. Could you guys recommend a couple of towns and pubs to visit on that route. And I´m not against making little sidetrips to check out some good spots But I don´t know when I´ll get a chance to go back over there so I want to be exposed to as much music and as many styles as I can. And I hope to meet up with some of you while I¨m over there as well. I´m already going to meet up with my good friend Eldarion, as well as Ava and Azalin and I hope many others. Thanks for your help guys.
And this is OT, I´m going to be missing out on my summer soccer workouts so if you guys in Ireland know anything about high quality pickup games in those areas, I´d be greatly interested. I´m looking for stuff around the 2 or 3 level, if you guys go by the 8 levels? Once again thanks guys.
We’re going to need to setup a meeting time and spot in Miltown. I’d say the Central Hotel is a good central spot, but when are you going to be in town? I’m wondering the same about Eldarion. Also, if you guys need to find a good B&B right in town, I know a good one, and this is where I’m gonna be staying.
Hello Az, I should be in the vicinity of Miltown by the 4th of July. How about meeting up before registration on Saturday? (i.e. before 2 pm) Also thanks for the offer about the B&B. We’ve booked a B&B a mile out of town so hopefully that’ll do for accomodation.
Eldarion, a mile out of own is quite far away! Next time you should “book” with me. Yeah, we should meet at the Central Hotel at around 13h00, before the registration. I’ll be wearing… hu… clothes!
Frankly, I wouldnt recommend camping or hostel in Miltown. I had a very bad experience in the past two years trying to sleep or enjoy a peaceful time 'round the camping area. Actually, last year, a clash between an american guy with a knife and an irish guy (the american concertina player couldnt sleep because the irish was making noise, so the american teared the irish’s tent apart with his knife) kept us awake for the night, and many fights kept on happening during the rest of the week. I assume you’d also have people playing music at 4am in the hostel or any cheap place like this. Two years ago, a pipe player started a session in the middle of the camping site at 3am! Maybe I’m getting too old, but a B&B seems like the best bet for the price, if you can manage to share a room.
The Hostel is quite new though and fairly small but othe than that camping and all that wouldn’t be my cup of tea either. I fact I wouldn’t come into town much at all and certainly not to play during certain hours and especially a large portion of the second weekend [there are a few country pubs hidden to take refuge in]. The week after is usally nicer, having tunes with those sticking around, without the drunks, the noise and the general feeling you’re in a zoo.
