No matter what bridle position I use(easy or hard pressure) on my Daye chanter,I sometimes have difficulty getting a good clean E in the second octave. It tends to distort and then fall to the first octave. It is particularly noticable in tunes like the ten penny bit. I tried a little tape on the first hole and that seems to help. Do you people have any suggestions …rushes etc?
Keep smiling,

Thank you Alan. I think I’ll try the cardboard first. Along those lines, do you think something like this problem means a double tapered chanter (not severly tapered at bottom) might have some possibilities? I’ve seen some recorders with a reverse taper. It might be possible to build using D. Dayes brass tubing method for the descending steps. I’m probably way off, but it could be some food for thought. Thanks again.
Marc
I also have troubles with this note on my Daye chanter. It always slips back into first octave, regardless of collar position, or rushes etc. Back and bottom D have also been problematic and a hard D seems impossible. I’ve given thought to the thread off the bottom of the staple thing…but will wait for a new reed first.
I thought it was just me, and the fact that I am new to the pipes (7 months), but I’ve let several pipers play them now, both proffessional and non, and all have commented on those notes.
I’m now on my third Daye reed, and having one made by a friend in Boise as well, since the first three haven’t been overly satisfactory. Tuening has been quite erratic, but I wonder if that is just related to the reeds being new.
I must say, I’m a little discouraged by the troubles I’ve had with the reeds, but I also wonder after seeing this thread, if there is a tweak that needs to be made to the design of the P.C. itself? I understand that reeds by their very nature are troublesome, but the issues I’ve had with mine have been consistent from one to another, hence my wondering if it’s a design flaw somewhere.
When you can reach him, David has always been helpful, and knowledgeable, but recently, four emails to him have gone unanswered. I hope he’s on vacation or something! ![]()
Anyway, thought I’d add my experience too…

Dear Alan,
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
It worked very well on the first try. I was scrounging around the house for a piece of card and ended up using the top flap of a Gauloises cigarette paper package. Just the right width! Once again thanks.
Marc
P.S. Ten Penny Bit comes out fine now. EAA/EAA…
