Tom Lehrer is responsible in large part for my twisted childhood, and I mean that in a good way.
For better or worse he retired from showbiz and went back to teaching in the sixties, except for a brief run doing tunes for The Electric Company. Untill…someone has posted video of him performing a few math related tunes…
All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we’re poisoning pigeons in the park.
Every Sunday you’ll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.
Ah yes! I remember now! Put the flat plastic thinggy on the table that went round and round. Place the sparp pointy gizzmo at the outer edge. And for goodnees sakes keep the folumn down or Mummy might hear. BE PREPARED FOR WHAT EVER . . . was definately my motto.
First WE got the bomb and that was good
Cuz we love peace and motherhood. . .
The funny thing is, I was just talking with Tyghre yesterday and trying to find out how he perceives subtraction. I did the ‘You can’t take three from two, two is less than three. So you look at the four in the tens place.’ The one tune I didn’t find funny at all was New Math. I understood it perfectly and couldn’t comprehend why my father was laughing to the point of tears. Tyghre cannot explain his method of subtraction. Sigh.
