I’ve just received two new whistles from Mack Hoover, a low D and a low F. They are incredible! Wow - I can’t begin to tell you how good they are, but I’ll try.
First the Low D . . . I’ve owned both a Susato and Dixon Low D. The Dixon I aquired mainly because the finger reach is good. But it is nothing compared to the Mack’s. I don’t know how he’s done it, but I don’t have to use piper’s grip on this whistle! It’s amazing. I have medium size hands but don’t have any problem playing this whistle.
It is made out of some metal alloy and has what a think is a delrin fipple. The tone is much clearer than the Dixon I owned and very sweet. It has that haunty sound that I’ve been looking for. The upper register is sweet and clear. IMHO, it is very very good.
Now the Low F . . . Admittedly I haven’t played many low F’s (only a Susato I used to own), but I don’t plan on purchasing any others. Why should I when I’ve found my dream whistle? This whistle is made out of PVC, but doesn’t play like it. In fact, it has the same “feel” as my prized wooden Busman. The F is tunable with a metal tuning slide. The finger spacing is very easy. But the thing that is awesome, is its voice. If you want a clear, clean whistle with enough volume to be heard w/o being screeching, this is it.
I’ve search for a whistle whose voice is flexible, smooth as silk and yet able to bend to my wishes. That’s what this F is. Mack has done it again!

He makes a limited number of whistles each month. I couldn’t be happier if mine, they surpassed my expectations.
