It seems like people are always wondering if there are any uillean pipers in their vicinity, so…
I have put up a web page where you can pin point on a map where you are so others can find you. Smile
You will need to supply your name and a valid email address, a link will then be sent to you to a page where you can put yourself “on the map”
The email address is not saved, it is just an authenticating device.
Several different maps are provided, choose the one that best suits your location. In the “extra info field” you can put your location name, email address (or basically anything you want), this information will show as a pop-up balloon when you mouse over it. The “Pin Link” field allows you to specify your website (the default is the Uilleann Pipe Discussion Forum forum if not specified) when someone clicks your link.
It’s fairly simple, hopefully it’ll be usefull too.
You do not have to be a member of the hosting forum in order to put your pin on the map.
Fantastic idea comes to reality. Thanks Jeff.
They have been talking about doing this on whistle board for years!
I see Kirk Lynch is listed. You may want to add pipemakers as a seperate filter for better reference when helping newbies. Click a selection and only pipemakers appear.
This version of the script really isn’t that powerful. I thought for sure that scripts for this sort of thing would be all over the net - they aren’t. Of the 2 or 3 map scripts that I could find, this is the only script that came close to what I wanted:
free (to be honest though I couldn’t find any commercial scrpts either)
not system specific. There is another version of this map script that is much more powerful but it only works with Invision Power Board - this forum and the “other” forum use PHPBB - and besides I didn’t want someone to HAVE to be a member of any particular board in order to post to the map.
-It had to be easy to maintain and set up
If there are any PHP coders out there, who feel up to the task of moding this mod even further, let me know because I really don’t have much php coding experience.
It’s a great idea, and looks very useful !
I do have a question: if one were to move, could one move one’s pin? I haven’t put a pin in for me yet because of that. Thanks!
It takes about five minutes for the email to get through. The first two times it would only let me put a pin on the USA map. The third time it finally let me put my pin on the Canada map, but I didn’t get the Advanced option to put my own web page or my location on the pin. Not a final solution, but getting close, though.
Seisflutes - if you need to update your pin, just put your name and email in again (the same ones you originally used), it will issue you a new email and you can get to the set-up page again. I can also change it for you at any time.
I know it may seem a bit labor intensive but, hey, it’s free.
DJM…
you should have seen two boxes off to the Left to add extra info. I can add whatever you want, just PM me.
Joe, let me know and I can put you in if you never get an email.
Jeff, that was the piece of missing information I needed. Once I had established myself on the map, I initiated another pin request, received the email with the new link, and this time I received the correct map plus the extra boxes to input my location and url.
Now I just have to sit back and wait for all those marriage offers to start pouring in.
