I read in my local newspaper today that a World Music Fesival (I wouldn’t call it a festival, its a very small town ), called “Unplugged in the Park” will be held about 10 miles from where I live sometime this month. I read that there will be various things such as dancing, music, and instrument builders/makers. Hopefully there will be a few flute makers that I can check out. Even if no flute or whistle makers are there, I still think I’m going to have a pretty fun time.
Has anyone here been to any World Music Festivals? Can you tell me about them?
We get WOMAD every year. (World Music and Dance or something like that) Its something like a 3 day festival that takes place over the weekend, held in an open air venue with 2 stages, many workshops, small recitals, vendors selling djembes and overpriced food.
There usually are a good percentage of African musicians, and there’s bound to be vocal and African dance workshops. The years I went there were also European bands playing eclectic sounding music like Rodrigo y Gabriella from Dublin (two musicians playing classical guitars backed by a double bass, inspired by death metal musicians) and other rock/ska/rhumba type bands. Occassionally you have the token “Celtic” band, like Shooglenifty or Afro-Celt. The workshops are interesting but are more for participative entertainment than for serious learning.
The bottom line is music festivals can vary according to what is available I guess. I don’t think there is a set formula by which they work with. I like going to this one because of the atmosphere really, as well as the chance to meet with any “Celtic” musicians passing by. Moreover its just about the only decent music festival we get in Singapore. Sad but true..
