I settled on Chris Abell blackwood whistles a few years ago and have managed to get a full set. I like them very much indeed.
The sound, intonation and finish are of a very high standard and very satisfying to play and own.
I have tried a few low D whistles but nothing has measured up to the Abells. I wish Chris would make one! I would love to be able to afford his low D ( a flute!)
Are there any excellent wood low D’s I’ve missed? I have been on the waiting list for a Swayne for a long time but I’m not holding my breath. Thanks!
Swayne is the one I would have mentioned, worth waiting for. Sadly my projected remaining years and Jon’s wait list time make it highly unlikely I’d ever get one.
Best wishes.
Steve
I’ve tried a Swayne and it was superb. I could have had it for a very reasonable price, but didn’t really need it given the number of tenor recorders and flutes I’ve already got, so I encouraged the owner to stick with it and try to get back into playing it again, as he’d never find another one. I haven’t heard him playing it in public but he seems happy with his decision.
