Windows Media Player 9.0

As a FYI to all, Windows Media player 9.0 when installed in a Windows XP machine will slow played music down and have it stay on pitch. This is a free download from Uncle Bill.

Sadly, this feature only works on an XP workstation.

Who’s Uncle Bill? (and don’t say that guy from Family Affair)

I have XP and MP 9.0

Be careful with WM 9, though. If you install it, it converts all your video files so they can only be played on that computer. If you take digital video of your kids and want to email it to grandma, she won’t be able to view it. Uncle Bill won’t tell you this.

You can disable digital rights management under tools → options → copy music tab. Uncheck protect content (media player 8 had the same thing). Also at setup time, there’s an option to acquire licenses automatically for protected content. I don’t think it’s quite the same thing that you’re referring to, but you might want to leave that off (also available under tools, options).

Under media library, there’s also an option to update missing media information from the internet. If you plan on redistributing copyrighted content, it’s probably worthwhile to turn this off.

It’s not, however, going to affect your home videos / pictures in any way, unless I severely misunderstand how Windows works.

On the upside, the new video features are pretty cool too. The video smoothing stuff does wonders. Check out http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/coolstuff.aspx

OK, I got the rest of the scoop on video protection. Corona Encoder (WMP 9 series encoding tools) can protect video, but doing so involves active effort on your own part, and may involve paying for 3rd party services in order to enable the protection.

WMP9’s a great product, esp for the price

Sorry if it seems like I’m beating a dead horse here. It just really irks me when people bash stuff with blatantly false statements (aka FUD).

Tinker, thanks for the info. I had been staying with WMP7, but I may update now. I had been going on info related to me by someone who has WMP9. They told me the player searched out all video files and copyprotected them without their consent. But I really wondered about the legality of that. Anyhow, thanks again for good info.
