window tweek

After trying some various Freeman tweeks on a high D whistle, the most intriguing was placing a piece of plastic with a sharpened blade directly over the labium.I used a soft plastic Food For Life bread(health food store item)rectangular block style twist tie.Probably,a light weight guitar pick would be fine as well.I cut the plastic to pressure fit over the labium with the sharpened blade(done with sandpaper on a tabletop)at the open window end.The interesting thing that happened next occured by simply sliding this piece of plastic down about another 1/16" over the window. It transformed the whole instrument into a high high D whistle.By this I mean that the whole instrument starts one octave higher like some sort of piccolo high D whistle. One cautionary warning:if anyone tries this, please remember to wear ear plugs in a room with acoustic insulation since this high high D easily goes all the way up to its highest possible high g.Tunes in the key of G sound nice in this setup. The C natural fingering is:OXXXXO.Good luck!..rloechler@exeter.edu

Oh ja, I don’t know the physics of it all btu I’ve had it happen that reshaping the blade “tightens” the window so much that you can’t hit the first harmonic. Should be able to play it one handed too, y’know- look up “one-handed scale” on the flute forum. Like a tabor pipe, but for a different reason.

Are the third octave fingerings the same as they were before the tweak?
