a bit of a strange link here - i understand that willie’s fling is based on the song champagne charlie here performed by a vaudeville act called tommy trinder
i can see a bit of a similarity but not that much
anyway, i thought it might be interesting to see the original
Well let’s count - Gennifer Flowers, Monica Lewinsky, and the unnamed woman he’s been with since at least the election makes it no3 at a minimum. There’s gotta be plenty we don’t know about.
Methinks you’ve been hanging about with Charlie a bit too much…
I know both of those flings, and I don’t hear anything remotely similar to Tommy’s tune.
Nice clip, though
CHAMPAGNE CHARLIE - “I’ve seen a deal of gaiety throughout my noisy life” Ch: “CC is my name” - Broadside by Sanderson (Edinburgh) - Used as Polka – Willie CLANCY (whistle) rec by Seamus Ennis, Co Clare: RPL LP 29883 - Lynette ELDON (clogs) with Jim ELDON (fid) Music Hall tunes with breaks in tune but sings this one: Concert Hall rec Radio 2 16/3/89: CASS-90-0715
From the Folktrax archive. On the West Wind recording they put out I believe the tune is labeled “Jumping Charlie,” if that’s the one - sounds like it. I remember reading in An Píobaire about the tape of Willie where he announces the tune, the writer of the article thought he was muttering something in Irish; Alec Finn recognized the classic bit of music hall though. The writer said the tune had become known as Willie’s Polka, if I’m remembering this correctly.
Willie was quite the cut up.
