Anyone going to Miltown, I’ll be in Ireland from Thursday 1st , might travel
up there from Cork at the weekend for a chat and a few pints and a listen, is it as good as everyone says. All the best. Alexander.

Droner will be present also…you’ll enjoy…it’s a great oul week but the crowds are big and prepare for sweat and beer stains!!!
I’ll be there tomorrow, Friday the 2nd, with pipes and flute, first time with the flute I got in December last year, hope to play a couple of tunes on it at least

Hi all, had great time at Milltown on Friday & Saturday met some great
musicians, going again next year for “sure”. I’ve got to have lots more of that Irish Guinness. Its magic!. All the best ye, all.
Hope you all had a great time at Miltown, I just managed Saturday all day mind, and stayed over night , excellent, made my holiday, I’ll be there longer next year now I know how good it is! great music, great Guinness great charactors,great banter,Sh-t Weather!, probably go my self or with a pal and have a long weekend next year.

It’s supposed to best from wednesday to saturday.
Also, mind you that there are good sessions going on in the vicinity of Malbay (Crosses of Annagh, Mullagh etc.) when the pubs in Malbay get too crowded. A session in Crowley’s Pub(?); Mullagh , not the one in the kitchen, made my week down there…yipes.. 
Was that the one last Saturday night with John M.? That was one of the best sessions I’ve ever heard in my life.
I had a great week, too…I really learned a lot in my class with Leo Rickard. What an amazing player!

Uhm, it was in Mullagh sat July 10th…late. I think the pub is called someone’s lastname starting on ‘C’…uh… There was one session in the kitchen behind the bar (which is to the right entering), and then the reeeeally good one in the far back of the place.
I dont know the name of this piper, but he had dark curly hair and was not very tall. Here’s actually a (poor) picture:

That’s the man and the session. Can’t quite tell from the picture but John McSherry was one of the pipiers in attendance. He’s an amazing player and an interesting character. I’ve had a chance to meet him a couple of times here and he is a lot of fun.
That banjo player was a crackup, too. I can’t believe he was even STANDING but you should have heard him play! Anyone get any recordings of that session?

We’re just back from Ireland. Willie Week was very good as regards the music and craic - we managed to land in some good sessions every day in Miltown itself without having to venture furthur afield. Peter & Guss Laban kindly drove us out to Mullach one afternoon and Peter got his pipes out in Conway’s and played. If you ever have the chance to hear Peter piping, then grab it.
Strange though this year apart from meeting an American piper, Pelham Norville and his companion on fiddle, Catherine? and an English flute player from Cornwall, Linda, in one session, we hardly ever encountered any musicians who were not Irish at the sessions we played in, at Queally’s, The Blonde’s or the Ocean View, Tom Malone’s cellar, or even the Central. Also no other pipers, except at one session in Queally’s. A very nice piper from Cork with an unusual full set by a relation called, I believe, Sean Ryan (Cork?). Ryan only made a handfull of sets. This D set sounded very good, not too loud, and with a fine tone from the chanter, regs and drones. Now we just started, or walked into/waited to get into, sessions that seemed interesting and it seems like there were not so many foreign vistors as usual at Willie Week this year? Or prehaps they were all doing classes and/or not playing in sessions in Miltown itself? On the last Friday we were very tired, it rained a lot and it was nice just to listen to a flat session in Queally’s where Padric MacManutha and later Harry Bradley played pipes amongst a flock of fiddles

That’s right, Sylvester Ryan, and the piper is Diamuid. It was nice playing in the session with another piper with a mellow sounding set. I’ll put some pics up this week. Anyone else play a set by Sylvester Ryan? I think Diamuid said he only made eight or so sets.
Several people have commented about the reduction in people at SSWC the past couple of years, and Americans in particular since 9/11. I don’t recall anyone saying whether there was any reduction in enrollment for classes, however.
