Today I went to the Maryland Renaisance Festival. It was a great day until I spotted a booth with a sign that said Woodwinds. It was the Olwell booth. I walked away once but I came back just to look again. I now own an Olwell bamboo flute. Will this become an additional problem for me? I already want more whistles than I can afford. But this flute is nice. I can run up and down the scale and play a simple tune. Am I in trouble?
Indeed. Especially since you’ve already got tone and have a simple tune already. Your journey, and the road to joy and penury has just begun, my friend.
Oh, Ron…if only I had known. I’d have been your sponsor, you know. I’d have given you my phone number. When you were tempted, you could have called me and said, “Blackhawk, I saw these flutes…I mean they were OLWELL flutes, man!” and I could have talked you through it. I’d have said, “Ron, you have to just take this one day at a time.” Now it’s too late. You’ve gone 'round the bend…
You should stop playing the flute immediately, for your sanity’s sake. I know. I’ve been there. One flute led to two, then four…
Pick up the flute very, very gingerly by one end between your thumb and forefinger. Wrap it in a thick layer of bubble-wrap. Good. Now, put it into a sturdy cardboard box. Yes, that one will do. Pack more bubble-wrap or wads of newspaper around it so it can’t move, then seal the box with wide tape (shipping tape will do) to make sure it can’t escape. Yes, like that. Now, write on the outside of the box:

The nice people at the post office will take the burden off your hands. It’s really better to end this quickly, you know, before the addiction completely takes over your life.
Depends on how many craft stores you take Mrs. Kiley to.[/quote]
I had to take her to 2 other craft stores on Monday and I have to take her to 2 more today.
I have been looking at Blackwood flutes with silver ferrules they really like nice. One girl at the RenFest was playing an Olwell Blackwood 3 piece that really looked nice and it sounded very nice.
What is it about the flute that is so intriquing? Why can’t we be satisfied with a good whistle?
Congratulations on the Olwell flute. People wait for long periods to get one. It is cool that you were able to just walk up and buy one. You’ll probably regret not buying more in a few hours!
