I saw this guy mentioned on one of Telegram Sam’s threads…just wondered who he is?
In the UK and Ireland Roger Neighbour is a book-writing guru in the world of teaching communication skills to us doctors…I got the feeling his name-sake in America had a less serious job…??!

It was a wonderful, gentle children’s show that ran for many years and was hosted by Fred Rogers. Much parodied and much beloved.

For some reason when I was young, and I still am pretty “young”, Mr. Roger really scared me. I don’t know why but he also really bugged me on top of that. Why is it that some people just love shows like that and others hate’em?

Mr. Rogers was very religious, personally,
and he also consulted with child
psychologists as to how to make his
show non-threatening to small kids.
That whole entrance, where he comes
in to his house wearing a tie and
jacket, hangs up the jacket, and
switches to a cardigan sweater, all
the while singing ‘Would you be
my neighbour?’ is child psychology
at work, I reckon. A very good
fellow, but I can see how it
could backfire.
Backfire how? 90% of the show is very comforting in its predictability and repetition. He’d been at it so long, and done it so beautifully, dealing with everything from birth to death, anger and fear and joy…I’ve never heard of any problems with the show at all!
Okay, I figured out why he bugged me when I was five. The reason is if I wasn’t challenged I was the type that would take apart the preschool tolet(no kidding! I really did that once!) and Mr. Roger just did not challenge me enough. Thus he really scared and bugged me. IT’s interesting out sometimes stuff really backfires!

Another way it can backfire is if a particularly intelligent child realizes – without necessarily being able to put it all into words – that it is being manipulated. Some people react very strongly, and negatively, to that sort of thing.
It’s funny about Mr. Rogers - he was very easy to make fun of in a way, because he was very sincere. Eddie Murphy had a long-running parody on one of those comedy shows, which was apparantly quite hurtful to Rogers, but when they met, Murphy said he loved the man.
He really didn’t talk down to kids at all and dealt courageously with difficult topics. My kids got bored of him quite quickly, but when they were at just the right age, I loved watching it with them. They were very engaged. And they always remembered the segment on the crayon factory and how crayons were made. Rogers has a huge respect for working life and also for the arts, and he passed that on most effectively.
Even further off topic, another of my favorite kid’s shows was The Magic School Bus. It explored basic scientific concepts in an entertaining way and my kids learned an enormous amount from it One of the best things the wonderful Lily Tomlin ever did.
I watched Mr. Rogers as a kid. Now my 4 year old son and I watch it every day while we eat lunch. We both enjoy it.
I used to wish Mr. Rogers was my dad…or at least that my dad was more like Mr. Rogers.

In the early eighties I bought a poster of Mr. Rogers. I put it up in the basement and my buddies and I threw darts at it. Great arguments ensued about what exactly constituted a bullseye.
