Who got whistles this year?

So, who all got whistles this year?

I got one. A Freeman Tweaked Sweetone C.
Plus the Fiddler’s Fakebook and the Regular size case from The Whistle Shop: Multi-whistle Case

I feel a little sheepish posting this, but… I was given one of the 25 delrin Lon Dubhs by a wonderful woman who was kind enough to take a special interest in me. Aside from being an amazing gift, it is also an amazing whistle.

I got em Will … 4 of them :astonished: … a blistering an unrelenting attack to the bank account .. ..
There’s a Low A Shearwater and BIG, bass A Colin Goldie..bought from fellow Chiffer Hulbert ..cheers mate ..and..
A Low C Overton…from Chiffer Jim Caputo …and ..
A Chieftain KWL Low E ..from Chiffer Krabben …
A wise man once said.“you can never have too many Musical instruments” .. and think he’s right  ..
I’m really happy with all my new ( and old ) goodies …
All the best to everyone for the coming New Year… :pint:

hi weedie

You playing the Goldie with both hands and feet? No way could I manage that stretch.

David

I didn’t get a whistle, but I got a book! Called the Portland Collection. Its full of contra dance tunes. I guess the local session groups use it more than any thing else, so I’m excited to dig into it! Maybe someday I’ll be good enough to go play with others and not embarrass myself too much!

Here is a link to the book. I got book 1. http://www.theportlandcollection.com/

‘a blistering an unrelenting attack to the bank account’ … hahaha classic line Weedie

Glad you’re enjoying them

I picked up a LOVELY OS Chieftain Low Eb that is quite the best Low whistle I’ve owned, so impressed I returned later the same day and purchased it’s high sibling

Has a wise man ever said ‘you can never have too much cheese’? I’ve gone along with that doctrine and I have a magnificent Stilton that would incommode a horse

:sniffle:

No whistle this year! In fact not even so much as one card.
Even Santa didn’t leave a lump of coal.

I want:

Dixon High C (or Low F) Duo (I want to try playing a flute head again)
Chieftain V3 Alto F tuneable
Generation Eb, F, and G (all above High D Silver-blue top)

I’ve received some very nice whistles over the years as Christmas gifts – boutique makers, exotic woods. I was not expecting any this year. But then I received a mother load of whistles from my wife and children. What a nice surprise.

  • A Soodlum’s Mello D, green top, brass body
  • A Feadan D, green top, nickel body
  • A Generation D, red top, brass body
  • A Generation C, blue top, nickel body
  • A Generation Bb, blue top, nickel body
  • A Generation G, red top, brass body

These are simple gifts one and all. Each whistle plays well except the Gen high G ( needs work on the ramp). The Gens all show the dimple characteristic of the older style molds. Only the Gen D and C exhibit signs of being played but not much. These were found as a group of old whistles on eBay for just a few bucks.

Oh well done I have got close to Zero Card/Gift status for last three years only for someone to thwart me at the last moment and deposit a card or gift

Did achieve near non contact though, apart from two mins buying a portion of fries in take away and 30 secs or so buying a bar of choc at local shop only contact with the living I had all Xmas day was with my cat

Should have got your own whistle Arch like I did

Hulbert

That Feadan whistle is a rare catch. They haven’t made them for years. I bought one new in Newport, RI in about 1981. It is a very nice whistle.

Feadan? I thought he meant to say Feadog. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Feadans before.

Yes, the Feadan was a big surprise. I had never played one before this. And I would agree, it is a nice whistle.

These ‘groups of old whistles on eBay for just a few bucks’ can turn up the odd gem

I picked up a bundle of six recently

2 x Gens (C n G)

1 x Shaw (High D)

and AND

2 x Hohners !!! (2 x Bb, 1 x Low G)

Quite stunned I was, enjoy the Feadan mate you got a nice whistle there

Hulbert

 yup - I got a lovely new high D Burke Brass - woo hoo !!!

From Big Davy ..

You playing the Goldie with both hands and feet? No way could I manage that stretch.

.. Hey there BD ..yep,it’s stretch allright…and can be a wee bit painful after a while..I’ve been playing it in an ‘across the body’ fashion ie: with the Whistle pointed towards my right hip. This seems to give a little bit extra in the way of figer stretch.Dont know why though  ..
From Hulbert .

I have a magnificent Stilton

…that is a super nice cheese that one Jack. The local supermarket has had it in stock for the last few weeks..little triangles weighing 125 grammes for $8.00…Well worth it though..
I’m not sure if this is an indication of a troubled mind or not, but I’ve discovered a new ‘taste sensation’ ..Stilton Cheese and prunes ,on a cracker biscuit :astonished: .. the family thinks that I have a problem  ..

Since cheese and prunes may have, er, exactly opposite effects on your digestion … when you explode you’ll have only yourself to blame.

Not a whistle, but my brother gave me a lovely silver flute :>) I’ve been having a great time trying to make a tuneful noise, and it’s coming!

Yeah, would have been able to afford it, if I didn’t spend my money on gifts and everything for everybody else. I don’t mean to sound like a Grinch or Scrooge. It just feels one sided.

My first two whistles were Feadogs (not bad after I learned how to tune them).
I gave them to a couple friends.
That was when I bought my Chieftain (KWL) Songbird D tuneable.
I really wish Phil would make a flute head for it and the rest of his line.

I’ve made my (hopeully one and only) leap in to high end whistles and got a Goldie High D. Not had chance to play it yet. I’ll be giving it a good road test this afternoon.

I also got several tune books of English folk, dance, session and morris tunes (I’ve just started Morris Dancing).

I didn’t get a whistle, but I got $200 to buy one with, and a bit more coming from my parents! Now I’m driving myself nuts looking at all the beautiful custom-made beautys and wondering, if I take the plunge and order an Impempe low D, would I actually be able to play it with the piper’s grip (and enjoy it if I learn it). Would I like my beautiful Burke A less if I bought a lower whistle (betrayal)! Or perhaps a Reyburn Bb or A (the A just reachable with my small fingertips). Or a wooden whistle in C by Paul Brewer?? YAAAAAAAAAAA! :boggle:
