I do not believe in patriotism at all, but today I found Whitney Houston’s “The Star Spangled Banner” in a thrift store, new and unopened, for $0.50, so I bought it. It’s not often that you find a new CD for $0.50.
And after listening to it, all I have to say is: wow.
Apparently she first sang it at a sports game or something. I think it’s the best version I’ve ever heard.
I don’t think I’ve listened much to Whitney Houston, because of the image I get of her, namely that of crack ho. But she can sing.
I’m not a huge fan of Houston. I don’t particularly care for all the little frills, twists and other “stylings” she adds to her songs. Reminds me of a trad Irish player who insists on adding every possible ornament to every tune. But that’s just me. I like the quality of her voice very much and just wish she’d sing them a bit straighter.
On American Idol, Randy Jackson calls them runs, and the biggest sin you can make on Idol (besides forgetting the words) is trying to be Whitney Houston when you have no business.
WH has/had a great voice…despite the irksome florid delivery. As for her singing anything “straighter,” recent photos of the poor woman look like doing ANYTHING “straight” is temporarily out of the question. yikes…
I saw her on an episode of Saturday Night Live once, long ago,
in which she played a catholic school girl singing “The Little
Drummer Boy” in a Christmas pageant rehearsal. I’ve never
heard such a simple song sound so beautiful. She kept the fancy
stuff down, and just sang. Her voice is really incredible. I wish
she’d forgo the Diva stuff and just sing, it’s amazing when she
does.
