Whistles: On walking before running :-)

That is one of the more fascinating quotes I’ve read on the forum. The context is jumping into neo-trad before you’ve paid your dues in trad. Any chance you could unpack what you meant about the two types of whistles?

Thanks for calling my attention to this thread. The part of this exchange I was most struck by was this, from MTGuru:

“Focusing too much on neo-trad players like Brian, Mike McGoldrick et al. as models is like running before you can walk, before you’ve paid your dues.”

I’m curious if MTGuru or another knowledgeable person could elaborate a bit on that … It struck me because I’ve been noodling around, as still a novice, with a Flook tune (“Wrong Foot Forward”), and I’ve been wondering what specifically makes “neo-trad” neo. And why is it best to ground yourself in “trad” first?

(And if you’ve already elaborated on this, MTGuru, and I missed it, forgive me …)

Is there a subject that has been elaborated on to death yet?

Religious faith? The forum died with it.
