As many of you on the board know, the majority of my playing time has been dedicated to Chieftains and although I am not willing to give any of them up, I recently obtained a handmade Low D that well, no other words can describe this beautiful sounding instrument than AWESOME
It’s a beautiful steamlined handmade Alloy tunable D by Silkstone and I have been absolutely blown away by its quality, its design, and overall performance. The back presure is medium, the D is a low haunting sound that makes goose bumps appear especially when play a slow air.
I am sharing this story with you not to put down any manufacture or brand of whistle nor to promote a certain brand, but to share with you the lesson I have learned…Don’t be so sure that there isn’t another brand of whistle for you and that take the advice of trying out every type of whistle… every make, model, manufacture, handmade, mass produced, try them all. If I had maintained my stubbornness and held out for trading for another Chieftain, I would have missed out on this beautiful sounding whistle…I took a chance and I am so thrilled I did.
Now go out into the world and find the manufactured or handmade whistle and enjoy.

I have a very special Silkstone low D in my collection… it’s #3 from first batch of the PVC variety.
Paul kept #1 for himself, and Thom Larson kept #2… and there were only three whistles in that first batch.
I’ve never had the opportunity to play the alloy version, but I’m sure it’s just as nice.
My favorite low D is still a ‘big hole’ model Overton made by Colin Goldie, but the Silkstone PVC is a close 2nd.
By a strange coincidence, I just made a great trade for a wonderful ‘Gold’ Chieftain Mezzo A, that I would not have been able to obtain otherwise. A special thank you to that person would fit this post well, I think.
I may print this thread out, Keith. It’s a well-written excuse … er… reason on why every brand of whistle needs tried, at least once. You never know where you’ll find the perfect whistle.
Got one. Love it. The octave change over and balance is wonderful. Although the timbre is not as reedy & rich as my Copeland it is still nice and certainly plays a hell of a lot easier.
