I know this is going to sound nit-picky because I’ve done it before and I am doing it now, but isn’t it technically against the rules to respond to posts with whistles for sale?
The guidelines are for commercial posts, like John Smith’s World of Music can’t come in and get in your face. The private sale of whistles has always been accepted here.
There is also a statement about making your post, and not being naggish, but we’ve always been free to sell whistles etc.
Tyghress, that’s not quite accurate. I quote here from Rich’s announcement (the same announcement you posted the link to). People too often do not follow these guidelines, but they do exist.
If you are not in the business of making or selling whistles or other products (of any kind), but you have items such as used instruments you want to offer for sale, you may post two messages. In the first, you describe what is available and you provide your email address and/or phone number. You may not use the message board to receive offers to buy or to negotiate further. Replies to your offer of sale should not be made on the board. Your message should clearly indicate that interested parties should NOT respond on the board. If replies are made on the board anyway, you must respond to them off the board. They will be deleted if and when I see them. When the item is no longer for sale, you may post a message indicating so.
That’s as may be, but I still don’t see any rules having been broken in this case. The only follow-up made by the original poster is a customary note saying that X has been sold.
Msheldon you are absolutely right. Sbruyette did not break any rules with this post. Cranberry had asked a question regarding the replies that had been posted in response to the original for sale post. I felt that the answer Tyghress provided needed some clarification. My comments were in no way intended as a criticism of Sbruyette. If my comment came across that way then I do apologize.
And Cranberry, two additional clarifications. While technically (based on the guidelines) Loren should not have posted his reply, what he did is accepted practice here. If you are unable to contact the seller through email, sending a reply through PM and posting a message advising the seller of the situation is acceptable even if it does “technically” violate the guidelines. Sbruyette’s follow up saying that some of the whistles had been already sold is specifically permitted in the guidelines.
