Hey there - I’m a newbie to both whistles and the list… A friend asked me to play some tunes for the prelude and postlude of a wedding, and while I’ve been gathering tunes, I wondered what the accumulated wisdom of the board would suggest… What quiet, lighter music would you pick for this occaision, either single tunes or a whole book you’d recommend. Thanks for the suggestions!
A lot of the O’Carolan pieces work nicely for weddings. Or Give Me Your Hand (but if you don’t have a good, solid high B this one can be painful to listen to!).
There are two books of waltzes out there (ironically called The Waltz Book and Waltz Book II, I think) that can be ordered from many folky places that have GREAT waltzes, many of which are frequently used for processionals and recessionals.
“Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”, is incredibly appropriate wedding music (if perhaps a little overdone). It plays well on the whistle. Start on middle D an go from there. “Joyful, Joyful” is another good one. It starts on C.
Give my regards to the bride and groom ![]()

My suggestion, listen to a bunch of tunes, and say, is this tune about this Mr. and Mrs. ? If it feels like them, then it should go over well.
Ever since I heard it I’ve been dying to play the Schottische Fran Havero as a postlude to a wedding or at a reception.
Here’s a link to Schottische](http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/564/564533.html%3ESchottische) Fran Havero. Its a traditional tune by Lothlorien</a](http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/99/lothlorien.html>Lothlorien</a)> available through MP3.COM. Some of their other tunes like Ghostwood</a](http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/563/563544.html>Ghostwood</a)> might also be appropriate. Their new tune, A](http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/1396/1396260.html%3EA) Stor Mo Chroimight make a nice prelude.
You may also want to pick a set of common jigs to play very slowly, almost like waltzes, as a prelude, and at speed for the postlude. It marks both the change and the joy of the marriage.
Weddings are such a joyous occasion it always easy to …

I have played at a lot of weddings. “Give Me Your Hand” is an obvious choice. I also like the tune “Wendel’s Wedding” by Jerry O’Sullivan. Most anything slow and pretty will do:
South Wind
Gentle Maiden
Miss Rowan Davies (Phil Cunningham)
When Summer Ends (Phil Cunningham)
Star of the County Down (3/4 instead of 4/4)
I have also used “Haste to the Wedding” slowed down and embellished as a waltz. And as tyghress mentions, many O’Carolan tunes are quite suitable.
Yes, I really love “Jesu”. NICE slip jig! The middle part gets a bit gnarly on whistle, though.

“Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”,
That would sound really cool as a whistle duet.

Just what I was thinking!
Anyone interested in doing the duet, trio, quartet etc? Mick, LittleMy, Jomac? We could send a file around until everyone has played on it ![]()

I know this BEAUTIFUL, yet very simple norwegian weeding march…it touches my heart every time in all its sonority and gentle motion. It really reflects a solemn and sincere promise, if you ask me. But then; I am norwegian…
I’d be happy to send you a midifile, score or mp3.
