Does anyone know of a good collection of penney whistle tunes on the internet that feature just the whistle with no accompanying instruments? I’m a beginner, and want to find whistle tunes so I’ll know if I’m playing them correctly. Most of the midi’s I have come across are either piano with the bass line playing or the whistle has other instruments playing with it. This makes it very difficult to discern the whistle sound from the rest of the lot. I am particularly interested in midi files because of the short download time.
Mick’s Virtual Whistle is a great place to go and listen to whistle tunes with no accompanying instruments.
Mick also provides the sheet music for all the tunes so you can learn to play them just like he does… after years of practicing!
Mike,
I see it’s your first post… WELCOME ABOARD!
If the midi files you want to download have other instruments in them you can toggle then off via hardware or software.
I have a Casio keyboard that plays MIDI files created in the ‘general midi’ format. It has the ability to toggle (turn on or off) any of the sound tracks (I think there are 16 in all) and only play the instrument(s) you want to hear.
I can download files off the internet and play them through the keyboard. I’m not suggesting you spend money on a keyboard… but, I would suggest looking for some free downloadable ‘sequencing’ or midi recording software that would give you total control over your midi files. This will also allow you to slow the tempo of the music without changing the pitch… perfect for learning difficult passages.
Try some search engines like ‘Yahoo’ to find the sequencing software and the whistle midi files you’ll find in many places.
I’ll check back to see how you’ve done so post your findings. If you need help finding some specific midi tunes I’ll do some searches to help out.
