Hi, after looking around I’ve decided that bags that hold multiple whistles are:
A: Overpriced
B: Plain and boring
And
C: Seem to be highly expensive on postage
Taking all this into consideration, my WHoA suffering girlfriend has very very kindly agreed to make several multiple whistle bags.
The four bags she has agreed to make me at present are:
A hanging bag for the wall so the whistles are off my desk. Apparently I’ll get more done if I’m not reaching over a whistle as this tends to lead to ‘Ooooh a whistle, I’ll just try -enter name of tune here- I might be able to play it this time’.
A bag for my belt holding a D and C for when I’m out at the park or at the bus stop and bored.
A multiple bag holding a couple of D’s and one or two C’s.
A multiple bag holding eight whistles of keys Low D, Low Eb, F, G, A, Bb, C, High D.
Now here’s why I’m posting. It’s not to brag or advertise or anything like that, it’s because she’s asked me to get the lengths of the whistles in the above keys. I currently only own D’s, C’s and a Bb.
I was wondering if someone knew the lengths of the other keys or if someone could point me in the direction of a chart or table showing the sizes of whistles in general?
Ok! I’m not at home and don’t have my whistles or a real computer with me but here’s some numbers from memory of what I make. These are approximate so don’t sue me. The lengths are total length of the whistle - tip to tip. You might figure a little extra as an allowance for various makes and designs. If an in-between key is not listed you can figure out the difference between the next higher and lower whistles.
High E - 10.5”; 270mm
High Eb - 11.25”; 285mm
High D - 12” ; 300mm
High C - 13.25"; 340mm
High Bb - 14.75”; 375mm
Mezzo A - 15.75”; 400mm
Low G - 17.5”; 445mm
Low F - 19.25”; 490mm
Low E - 20.25”; 515mm
Low D - 22.75”; 575mm
Low C - 25.75”; 655mm
As for pocket widths I figure about 1.5" for high whistles, 2.25" for mid-range whistles (Bb,A,G,F) and 3" for low whistles. If you use heavy padding allow a little more.
And, I just thought of this, you could check my measurements against the designs on Guido Gonzato’s site too.
The lengths are sort-of determinable mathematically, or at least the distance between the blade and the end of the tube. A low D is twice the length of the high D. You have to add on the length of the sound window and the length of the head. So within certain ranges the length of whistles depends upon their pitch.
Someone here will give you the maths… or you could get a rough estimate from a whistle calculator.
The (ahem) girth varies between whistle makers, depending on material and individual design.
