Whistle sighting on "Zoom" on PBS today!

I was catching up with some email when I heard the sound of a whistle emanating from the TV where my kids were watching Zoom this afternoon, so I ran in to check it out…

Zoom did a little segment on a young Zoom fan who lives in Cape Breton and plays whistle and bodhran! She plays in a little band, and she explained the local Celtic music culture…it was pretty cool. If anyone can catch it, I’m sure it will be on in other time zones, in the first half of the show. It’s on PBS.

Wow. Now there’s a flashback!
Back in 1974 or '75 “Zoom” did a story on a young girl who played whistle and sang in a band.
I was about 12 at the time and thought - “gee, I could do that”. I took my allowance, walked to the music store and bought a lttle Generation in G (?!). I still have it, and it has since been autographed by James Galway.
Thanks, Robin, for the trip down memory lane!

That would be Zoom episode #508. It will probably repeat within the month. PBS tends to repeat them several times in rapid succession. Kind of annoying most of the time, but makes it easy to catch one again if that is what you want.

My programming information doesn’t show the next airdate, but I can try another search once the September information is finalized. (In case you didn’t know, I work for a PBS station.)

Good ol’ KUAC?

That girl is Fiona McGillvery. She also has an amazing voice. She is the daughter of Alistair McGillvery, a fine Canadian songwriter. She, her brother Ceiran and two other kids, Jimmy and Roseanne MacKenzie, are a group called The Cottars. if you are ever at a concert, Fiona’s rendition of The Briar and the Rose is a three Kleenex job and brings the audience to its feet.

The Cottars have one cd out and another coming soon. Each child is multi talented. Ceiran also plays whistle. Recently, I met up with them at a concert because I had a whistle to deliver to them from PAt O’Riordan. Cieran tried out my whistles, He loved my Burke and I think he is going to get one. If you ever have the chance, go see them.

Forgot to add the website for The Cottars; that ‘little band’ wil be touring the US, Scotland and Japan in the coming months.

Well, shoot. I had the chance to see them at Irish Fest over the weekend and passed it up. Maybe next year…

By the way, anybody remember the Zoom song? Send it to Zoom! 0-2-1-3-4!

Thanks for the info, Lizzie! She did sing on the show and it was really lovely. I think I missed the name of her band, since I only ran in when I heard the music playing. It sounds like they have a nice life up there in Cape Breton, and she seemed like a real genuine nice girl.

And, it looks like they’ll be performing very close to me, very soon! Gotta catch that one, if I can figure out where it will be (the website doesn’t give the specific location)

P.S. Now zoom has as part of their “send it to zoom” song “email or z-mail, pbskids.org! Send it to zoom!” Times, they are a changin…

“Good ol’ KUAC?”

Um, yeah. How’d you know? You local?
