Okay, I read a really great review of John Sindt’s whistles but I’m under the impression he may not make a low D (which is what I’d like). I have a decent “beginner” whistle, but it’s beginning to frustrate me now and I’d like a better one.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a good metal (I think I’d like that better than plastic) Low D whistle that is under about $175. ?? I love this instrument but I’m still a beginner and my abilities don’t warrant something top of the line, but I would like something good, but mid-range.
Can anyone help me with some opinions on this matter?

The price was lowered on this, although I don’t know how low. It might be within your range, or you might want to consider stretching your price range just a tad. Overtons are GREAT.

In the past month I’ve gotten two Impempe whistles. The first was a Bb, which I liked a lot so I ordered a high D which I also liked a lot. I am getting a real flute like sound, especially from the high D. Workmanship is excellent. These are not a low end or even a mid-range whistle quality wise. Don’t let the low price fool you. The Low D from Impempe is $80 plus shipping. The whistles come from South Africa so they take a while to get here, my first took about a month and we thought it was lost, the second arrived a lot faster. Since getting the D I haven’t been able to put it down. Doc had two on the Irish Flute Store, a Bb and C. You could pick one of those up and try them out and then maybe decide to go for the Low D based on quality of the product.
Ian is a real gentleman to deal with. I’m sure you would be satisfied if you wanted to take a shot and just order the Low D.

The whistle I have is a Howard Low D. I like it but the low end tends to be quite weak and it clogs up with condensation quite easily. It was given to me as a gift with the caviat “this is a good starter whistle. See if you like it”. Well, I love the instrument. I just want a better one. (Just not the most expensive one. Not yet anyway)
