  1. Greeley, Colorado
  2. Medium for Practice & Small Session / Loud for Large Session
  3. Conical as my two favorite whistles are.
  4. My Rose is Wooden and My Copeland is plastic/brass
  5. Metal & Wood
  6. Little Chiff
  7. Used to have Whoa… Not anymore…
  8. No
  9. Expensive: Rose & Copeland Brass Cheap: Dixon
  10. I don’t “NEED” to keep searching but I’m always “All Ears” for a new one… My Rose & Copeland do the job just fine…

1.Mount Hermon, CA (in the mountains near Santa Cruz)

  1. Depends. For practice, I like a quieter whistle, because I live very close to my neighbors . For playing with other instruments, however, I want something more assertive.

  2. Cylindrical

  3. Plastic currently (the only one I’ve played so far that is “like” the Clarke is the Clarke, and I don’t like the contrasting feel of metal on my upper lip and unfinished wood on my lower lip). I’ve never tried all-wood (at least not in a whistle, though I like my wooden recorder) or all-metal.

  4. I’m flexible. So far my favorite whistles have metal bodies, so I guess that’s my preference, but I also have a plastic Susato I’m fond of, and I’ve always wanted to try a wooden whistle.

  5. Just A Little Bit of Chiff

  6. Definitely WhOA-afflicted

  7. Curious

  8. Kinda depends on what you mean by “cheap.” My current favorite (a Cillian O Briain “improved”) cost me around $30 (give or take, depending on exchange rates), so it’s not as cheap as, say, a Meg, but definitely cheaper than a fine handmade whistle.

  9. I don’t think there is any “one” perfect whistle for me. So much depends on what I’m playing and the circumstances under which I’m playing it. I definitely have my favorites, and I suspect I will meet more favorites as I acquire more whistles.

Redwolf

  1. Where do you live, regionally? (Southern US, UK, Southwestern US, Eastern Canada, ect.)

Washington DC - Baltimore area.

  1. Which do you prefer in whistle volume? Quiet, Medium, or Loud

Quiet for at night, medium for the back yard, loud for large groups.

  1. Which style do you prefer in whistle type? Conical or Cylindrical

Most of my current favorites are cylindrical.

  1. Which type of mouthpiece do you prefer?
Wooden (like the Clarke) or Plastic

Yep, it should have one of those. My favorites have metal or plastic.

  1. Which material do you prefer for a whistle to be made of?
    Metal, Wood, or Plastic
My favorites are plastic (dixon reg-d)
    Metal - Overton Low-D
And I’d love to get a wooden one (TW or PaulB) played several and just don’t have the cash.

  2. What type of tone do you prefer in a whistle?
Very Chiffy, Just A Little Bit of Chiff, Virtually No Chiff, or A Tone As Pure As Crystal

A little chiff.

7. Are you afflicted with the disorder commonly known as WhOA?

No definitely not afflicted, I am enjoying the disorder completely.

  1. Are you obsessed/preoccupied/concerned/interested/curious about the so-called Crystal People?

I refuse to answer on the grounds my message may dis-appear.

  1. What is your most favorite whistle in A. the cheapie category, or B. the expensive category? (please specify which category you are answering for, Expensive, Cheapie, or both…)

A. Dixon Tunable
B. Overton Low-d

  1. Do you feel like you have not found the “perfect” whistle for you, and that you must keep searching?

Found several, and own a few, but still looking.

  1. Northwest US (San Francisco)
  2. Quiet
  3. Conical, all the way
  4. Wooden - very much so. Plastic is good because it’s hearty–you can keep on in a purse or pocket and simply wipe it off before you play, or you can be drinking a Coke and play, but overall, wooden is preferable and has a MUCH nicer sound, I think.
  5. Metal
  6. Tiny bit of chiff is OK
  7. I suffer horribly from WHOA. I was relieved to find out it’s an affliction.
:sunglasses: Who are the Crystal people?
  8. Favorite low-end: my Original Clarke in C. Favorite high-end: my Shaw Low A (which is essentially just a bigger verison of the Clarke in many ways).
  9. Well, I guess I am still looking for the pefect whistle. I’ll probably know it when I find it. My Clarke comes close–I’ve played other C-Clarkes and they don’t sound like mine, I think it may have a defect or something that makes it wonderful for me. I just wish it were a tad lower instead…maybe in Bb. Oh well.

No one else is interested in taking the “Scientific Study of Whistle Preferences as Related to Geographical Location?”

Oh come on! Be brave!

  1. Southwestern US

  2. Quiet

  3. Conical

  4. All metal (like Chieftains, etc.)

  5. Metal

  6. Virtually no chiff

  7. Absolutely incurable

  8. Nope, live and let live

  9. Cheapie (current fav. is a MEG)

  10. Still searching, and searching, and searching…

But
I’m just a beginner, so what do I
know…

  1. Where do you live, regionally? (Southern US, UK, Southwestern US, Eastern Canada, ect.)

Delaware. I haven’t figured out yet which region this . . . only been here a year. If you live around here, you understand what I mean :-/

2. Which do you prefer in whistle volume? Quiet, Medium, or Loud

quiet for late nights and private times
medium otherwise
I’m not good enough to play loud whistles yet  I would scare myself.

3. Which style do you prefer in whistle type? Conical or Cylindrical

Don’t care, as long as it sounds good!

4. Which type of mouthpiece do you prefer?
Wooden (like the Clarke) or Plastic

For the most part, I don’t care. I do like the smoothness of my Hoover, which is metal.

5. Which material do you prefer for a whistle to be made of?
Metal, Wood, or Plastic

I seem to be leaning toward metal, but I haven’t played a wood whistle yet. I love the sound of the wood ones when I’ve heard other people play them. I’m hoping to be able to get one of brewerpaul’s one fine day . . .

6. What type of tone do you prefer in a whistle?
Very Chiffy, Just A Little Bit of Chiff, Virtually No Chiff, or A Tone As Pure As Crystal

Pure pure pure

7. Are you afflicted with the disorder commonly known as WhOA?

Sigh. Yes. I thought I had a cure – order a whistle that won’t come for a while so you have something to look forward to (I’m waiting for my Dixon). This should abate WhOA in the meantime. It helps, but is not a cure.

8. Are you obsessed/preoccupied/concerned/interested/curious about the so-called Crystal People?

Hmmm . . . they don’t happen to make beautiful, pure, crystal whistles, do they? Do they have a website showing samples?

9. What is your most favorite whistle in A. the cheapie category, or B. the expensive category? (please specify which category you are answering for, Expensive, Cheapie, or both…)

My favorite cheapie these days is my Generation. I don’t own a really expensive whistle – my most expensive is my Hoover, which I love. Those are the 2 that get played every day.

10. Do you feel like you have not found the “perfect” whistle for you, and that you must keep searching?

  3. Conical

  4. Plastic

  5. Metal

  6. Just A Little Bit of Chiff

  7. I’m not suffering from WhOA. I have a fiddle now.

    \

  9. Favorite whistles are Copeland and SweeTone, so both.

  10. I have not found the “perfect” whistle. However, I do not feel I must keep searching.

  1. US: New England

  2. Medium when playing solo, Loud for a large session (or quiet in a session if I don’t know the tune real well but want to have a bash at it).

  3. Conical

  4. Given only those two choices I would opt for plastic. How about metal (Overton, etc.) or metal & plastic (Copeland, etc.)?

  5. Metal

  6. Virtually No Chiff, or A Tone As Pure As Crystal

  7. I’m getting better…honest!

  8. No comment.

  9. A. Feadog (McCullough Pigott model)
    B. Copeland

  10. My 10year old Copeland is as close as I have gotten. There really isn’t such a thing for me though. I like different whistle characteristics for different situations.
