Hey All,
I’ve been having fun with my cellphone!
This may be old news for you computer literate people, but…I finally learned how to do “voice records” on my cellphone, and found that it makes excellent recordings of my whistling (not that my WHISTLING is excellent…)! So I can listen to how good (or bad) I sound wherever I am!
Not only that, I found that I can whistle a tune and apply it to my ringtone, so now I can put the hobbit’s theme in D, or The Immigrant in low A as my ringtone! Is that cool or what?
And, I just fouind that I can send a tune with a text message, which I just did for my wife and my sister!
And my wife called back and said, “You know when you do that we have to pay for it.”
[sigh!]
10 years ago, the hobbit theme was cool, not so much now. I have no clue what the Immigrant is. As a Lieutenant in the Cool Police, I’ll let you go with a warning. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
You are wrong, Mutepointe, so very WRONG!! We who are fans of Middle Earth know that the hobbit’s theme will always be cool, not only because it’s an excellent tune (like the Ballydesmond Polka) but because Middle Earth is better than Real Earth. In Middle Earth life is simple, growing things are valued rather than bulldozed, the small can be victorious over the big, loyalty counts, women are beautiful without having to be sexy, and deep friendship and love between men is a valued and lasting thing.
Middle Earth is better than Real Earth, therefore the hobbit’s theme is a more than a song, it’s a symbol, almost a philosophy. It’s a classic. It represents all the best there is.
But this much is true: Ten years ago I was cool-not so much now!!
I worry in case you’re serious about Middle Earth being better than real Earth. Me, I prefer real passion, real joy, real pain, real blood, real laughter and … um … real music.
I have called in the Paddy Wagon to arrest you all. You folks are more delusional than the Star Wars Geeks. And you would not believe how cool they think they are when they say, “Live Long & Prosper” and do the Spock hand thing.
I have contacted Inter-Cool, a division of Interpol, so that they can round up the Chinese Boy for questioning. There has got to be something illegal about possessing a set a fingers like that.
Riverman, you are NOT crazy. Everything you cited as being virtuous in the Middle Earth is EXACTLY what the real world could use a hefty dose of. I’m bloody sick of the complex world as technology is not the be-all-end-all answer to all of man’s troubles. We need more virtuous men and women again in this world, but sadly I feel as though those days have long since been numbered. Yarg, don’t get me started!
Also, Mutepointe got it wrong, as the first movie came out in 2001, so that’s hardly ten years gone (yet).
Movies aside, the books are what mean the most to me. It was nice to hear whistles featured so well in the soundtrack and even though I had a different soundtrack in my head to accompany the books since childhood, long before the movies came out, I think that they did justice where failure could have been oh so easy…musically and overall!
At any rate, couldn’t let your excellent comments slip by without a hearty pat on the back!
projektio28, pointing out a 2 year difference is just going to prove the case to the jury all the more. Dig that a whole a little deeper, why don’t you?
Well, I am simply pointing out that the Middle Earth whistle tune from the movies was a nice little musical deviation from the norm and it’s not like the movies have been out for donkey’s years. The way you said “ten years” I felt was like saying that Kennedy was still in office when the movies came out, that’s all, no personal attack on you good sir…
Oh and no, I won’t put down my shovel until my hobbit hole has been dug into the hillside thoroughly!!
Benhall, I live in the real world too–and sometimes I get too much of it, so…I wander. One of the great blessings of Middle Earth.
And as Matt said, we could use a hefty dose of Middle Earth. That’s why I still watch the movies, Matt, and read the books about every couple of years. Slowly. With great relish.
But, Mutepointe, I don’t deny being a bit delusional. And yes, I’ll go quietly. Is there any Tolkein in the jail library?
we interrupt this thread to bring you this news bulletin…
our office has received a copy of video of an individual identified only as “mutepointe” reciting what was identified as snippets of poetry allegedly written by an individual named Tom Bombadil… or Dillybomb… or something like that. When contacted for comment, Mutepointe (wearing a somewhat less than stylish “cool-cop” ensemble) denied having ever quoted Bombadil poetry. When asked where these allegations might lead, Mutepointe responded,“The road goes forever on.” The interview was concluded with an unusual hand symbol and “May the force be with you.”
we now return you to our regularly scheduled thread…
Woot! I had no idea my old beater cell phone had this capability. My ringtone now is Home Ruler and I’ve had 4 people compliment me on it in the last 2 days.
