Whistle Maker Syndrome Strikes Again!

I made a Bb Low Tech Whistle today. The newness of it might cause a little bias, but this is my best yet.

Decided to go slightly breathy with this one, something that’s grown on me since getting the Waltons Irish Whistle in C. The 2nd 8ve is also a joy to play, and won’t reduce my chances of being a father. This will probably be the last one made until spring. By then I might talk myself into a low A or G.

I like the Bb key. Lower than a D but still fast and responsive.

Can you post a photo? My low-tech whistle experience was not good. Tried to make Low F and it didn’t play well. I think I may try again with a G or something using a smaller tube.

Go ED!!!

This is the life huh?!

I’ll try to, but usually taking photos of instruments is like photographing Sasquatch or Nessie… they always turn out grainy or blurred.

I had a few clunkers myself, there’s a definite learning curve for those of us who don’t usually spend time in the shop/garage making stuff. There were times of frustration & wanting to throw in the towel and just get those fancy store bought ones, but sanity and good sense prevailed eventually.

It might become my favorite key, and it already has with my Mom. Even with her being hard of hearing the D whistles can be harsh to her ears in the upper register. It’s not so bad in the warmer weather when the windows can be open, but in a closed up house those highs bounce around too much. The LTWs are a bit more mellow though, which helps keep me from becoming homeless.

Definitely. At 1st it was a little nerve racking making them, but now it’s actually relaxing. There’s that moment of anxiety when attempting the first note though. It’s still hard to believe that one can walk out to the garage with pipe and dowel and a few hours later have a quality instrument.

and then later .. the hours turn into days.
And then some want to be and some don’t ..

It all gets a little metaphysical . and then you see the coat tail of the tin leprechaun flitting round a corner .. just out of reach .. if you look out the corner of your eye - just a glimpse .. all worth while.

Stick, I love reading your posts! You put a smile on my face everyone I read one. Can’t day that I " grasp" it all the time though. You are truly unique and I Admire your slant on things! There must be sumtin’ wrong wit me! Lol.
