No one has mentioned Chieftain A whistles either… I just recently purchased one, and I must say this is one of my new favorites of the whistles I own. It seems to have a sort of Irish flute tone… mellow, but sweet sounding. I love it.
I’ve never played a hoover a. I have a hoover low G that’s one of my very favorites.

Yep, I like Mike’s whistles a lot. His AlPro A has been a staple in my whistle roll for a long time. Many players have posted accurate descriptions of the Burke A whistle on this thread, and others. However, information about the Hoover instrument seems to be in a minority…Tomcat says his Hoover A has soul. Yep. Difficult to back that up in an objective way, but I agree with Tom, completely. I own a non-tunable aluminum Hoover A with which I will not part. I have also played one of my students’ CPVC tunable A whistles, and both my instrument and hers have personality. Each has a tiny bit of chiff - and both sound like whistles, not a cross between a flute and a whistle. The Hoover A’s have a pleasant, but not loud bottom end. They do not get harsh in the upper second octave. Whether you pick Burke or Hoover, you simply cannot go wrong.
Best.
