Whistle in A

Anybody have a chieftain or overton A, preferably not tunable,
they would want to sell or trade? I have a new Chieftain
C I could offer or plain old money. PM please.
Thanks, Jim

Careful with nontunable Chieftain As. I’ve got one, and it’s very badly out of tune. We’re talking 25 cents flat all up the scale. It’s in tune with itself, but only really good for solo playing unless I have anybody I’m playing with retune to my A whistle, which usually isn’t an option.

Agree 100% about the Chieftain. A friend of mine has one that’s horribly out of tune, both in basic pitch and with itself. I mean bad. Then I have a soprano D that’s dead-on in all respects. Wonder what happened to the A?

Overtons are a different story and I’d like to have an Overton A myself.

I love my tuneable Chieftain A to death - fantastic whistle.

That said, I wouldn’t risk buying a non-tuneable unless you truly never intend to play it along with others…

The way it was explained to me is that because Chieftain aren’t actually hand made and made by CNC (therefore all the hole are always identical) they are out of tune because the resonance of a certain tube isn’t the same as another… that’s why some are in tune…but most aren’t…

This of course applies to non tuneable…tuneable, well you can probably correct any tuning error in manufacturing as long as the holy layout is correct.

Jim, I know you are looking for a whistle from someone on the board but if that’s not happening for you, you could jump into the fray here (if you haven’t already).

I have no realtionship with the whistle offered there. I just thought of your post when I saw it.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have played non-tunable Chieftain low D whistles,
also Bb, C and F, and all were well in tune, internally
and externally,
so I’m surprised to hear these sobering stories.
I do want an externally in tune whistle, no question.
I’m finding the A key very helpful and I like
the alloy sound.

Thanks to all.
