Whistle Carry Case

I just got a new Burke Brass Narrow Bore D whistle and I am looking for a quality carry case.

Has anyone tried this one?

There’s a very similar one available from Poland, at a better price: here, on ebay. Delivers promptly and at a very reasonable postage.

I have wondered if those things didn’t start life as carriers for drumsticks. Though in themself fine, I find them overkill. They’re bulky things, especially with the straps and buckles on them. A bit over the top to carry a few whistles in. YMMV but I rarely take away more than one whistle and stick it in a side pocket of the camera bag, the pipes case or carry it in my pocket, if need be in one of those plastic slide cases Dixon whistles used to come in. Whistle cases you can’t stick in your pocket, to me, become just another thing to carry and to keep an eye on (they’re easy sat on or stolen), extra hassle. Mine stays in a drawer of a filingcabinet, with it’s whistles inside and never goes anywhere.

If you want something like that at all, a decent quality cloth/fabric whistle roll, closing with velcro, may be more practical.

Burke Whistles makes a padded case for a reasonable price and has a belt loop on back for easy carrying.

Killarney Whistles makes a similar pouch.

Or think Pelican pistol case (plastic).

Drumstick case.

Leather sheath or holster.

I have the padded case from Burke. Just wanted something else.

I got the Pinegrove Leather case for Christmas. It’s very nice. Well constructed and does what it is supposed to do.

Is there a good case suited for low whistles, from mezzo A to baritone C or Bass Bb?

Not sure if made anymore:

Hobgoblin sells pouches for various sizes. If you are looking for something harder, plastic poster rolls come in various sizes. If you want to go ballistic, a piece of pvc pipe with a cap on either end is good. Glue one end down and leave one free. I have a thermal bag I carry things in which contains a hard flute case and a hard concertina case so I am moving to a pvc pipe even for my high d, since the weight of the heavy objects tends to crush lighter ones.

I learned from my dad to make fishing rod cases out of PVC. In addition to an end cap, you can also put a threaded sleeve on the other end with a screw-in cap. Very durable, and I’m sure it would work as well with a flute.

I was on that site the other day and I noticed that all the links lead to a strange site, unrelated to the products on the main site, and is like a dead site. I wonder if they got hacked!

I have ordered the brown Pinegrove leather case I mentioned in my original post.

Mine was made to go down to Low C. The Bass A don’t fit!

Drumstick cases are many and varied: this one has padding and small pockets. a low whistle would have to stick out the top

A woodturners lathe tool roll would work for low whistles

You can find those in leather

That particular one says up to 22" long.

My Low D is 23", my Low C 26", my Bass A 30".

Mine come in at 22.5.

Tool rolls for wood turners do come in other sizes

There are a a bunch of people on Etsy who will make you one

Last I heard/remember they’d stopped making these. Complications in life, etc. It’s a pity because they’re nice rolls. Sometimes they will show up on ebay or the board here.

I made myself a big roll that fits all my whistles. It means that they sometimes live together, though not much since they end up wandering around the house anyway. They end up in little herds upstairs around the computer and down around the chair in the living room, with an odd one wandering off to the kitchen.

Making a roll was not much of a technical challenge. Just some oblong pieces of cloth, edging tape and a sewing machine. It’s all double layered (including the slots and flap) with a lightweight cotton canvass material and a velvety material on the inside and against the whistles. It was measured to take anything up to a complete alto G whistle, that I haven’t purchased yet, but it does have an A in there.

It works well and I use it for some band practices, and when I want to take all my whistles with me to some place for some purpose.

I meant to get round to making a smaller everyday roll too. At the moment, if I’m just taking 3 or 4 whistles out with me, they get wrapped and rolled in a piece of cloth to stop them rattling and rolling about in the bag.

It might be nice to have something more formal for gigs, but rolling in a piece of cloth seems to suffice, though the A whistle does go into a sleeve that came with a Quena. The Quena itself lounges on a bookshelf from where it tries to lure passing humans into playing with it.

I have a lot of these…

And can’t be more happy..
