Whistle board info

New registrant here…There seems to be a lot of religious issues discussed on the whistle board. Gee whiz…you folks would be dismissed from the Uilleann pipe list in short order. I suppose there is an appropriate forum or place, perhaps off board amongst interested parties, for the discussions.

Now, on to whistles… sort of…, I mostly play Uilleann Pipes. I play a few tunes on the whistle well but have not been able to get it going on the tunes I know on pipes…subtle fingering and major phrasing and ornamentation differences. Really, too little time in my busy life for music and I prefer to spend the time available with the pipes strapped on rather than with a whistle in my mouth. So, I can’t advise new whistle players about tutors and other learning tools. I have a friend in Nashville, a super lady named Jessie, who plays whistle in a mighty fine way… and flute as well. She recommended to me the McCullough tutor for a friend of mine who’s interested in learning whistle. I’m trolling for other recommendations from those of you “in the know.” Any thoughts? Has anyone tried the MadforTrad whistle tutor? GLANDMAN

Welcome Glandman.

I have the MadforTrad tutorial and like it. Finnegan tongues every note which is a bit different. There’s not much “tutorial” compared to LE McCullough’s Tin Whistle Tutor, just a brief paragraph or so at the top of each song. I do find it really handy to have the video to play along with–much better than a CD because it’s easier to loop and repeat.

Use the search function at the top right corner of the page to look up MadforTrad. You’ll find lot’s of other opinions. You might also skim Dale’s newsletters. I think he posted a review recently, but I’m not sure. I know he likes Bill Och’s tutorial.

Cheers,
Debra
