i want to make a whistle roll or a whistle bag for a friend of mine and I just wanted to know if any of y’all have any plans on whistle bag or rolls construction. I dont have a whistle myself so I would also like to know the dimension of a d whistle. how long and how wide is a D tin whistle?
I couldnt afford to buy one so I figured out I would be better off making one. please please help!
I make them, so I may be able to help. A D whistle is typically 11"-12" inches long, and usually about 1/2"-3/4" in diameter. When you make your bag or roll, be sure to account for folds, seams and a little extra space on each end, and each side of the whistle to ensure that your finished holder will be long and wide enough, especially if you use stiff or heavy materials.
Annie, can I just say that your Sassafrass whistle rolls look fantastic!
I’m flying to New Zealand next month, so I’m looking into getting aluminum flight case made for my whistle collection. I had given thought to somehow converting an old saxophone case into something useable – has anyone ever done anything similar?
Years ago my wife made me a very nice one that will hold three D whistles. She started with a ~5" by 30" (12.5 cm by 75 cm) piece of two-sided synthetic fleece. It’s folded over so that about a foot of it overlaps to make a pocket, the last 6" is a flap. Then four seams are sewed to make three pockets, each a generous inch across and a foot long. She then sewed a couple of ties to the outside. So the flap folds over the opening, and the whole thing can roll up and be tied secure. The double fleece is plenty of padding.
Thanks doubleg! I’m going to have to go hunting for cases large enough to fit my low whistles. I’m thinking an old tenor saxophone case will do the trick. Pity most of the instrument stores in my city are expensive!
My newest Shepherd holds up to 19 whistles and/or flute sections, and has polycarbonate shielding. It’s pretty darned nice, if I do say so myself.
Here are some teasers:
This one’s not quite completed. Judy’s going to ‘test drive’ it for me before I finish hers, so that I can make any needed tweeks. This one’s pretty flashy, what with the beading and tassel.
Front with cover flap (not yet attached)
Back with pocket in use.
Back with pocket empty.
Holding 19 whistle and flute sections, up to 16 inches long, and one cleaning rod.
Yes, I’ve relined and repadded cases before. It’s tricky to do right, but it is quite feasible. I’m still looking for some suitable hardshells to customize.
I bought two great cases from someone on this board. They are converted pool cue cases. He just put foam blocks as dividers and spaced them based on what whistles he wanted to put in the case. It’s a really convenient way to carry whistles around.
It’s a bit fancier than I’d indicated. The parts between the whistle compartments are double-seamed; they can hold swabs and such. Plus there’s obviously piping on the outside edges. Same idea can be made much more simply.
decoration needs to be done and I was thinking of decorating the whistle bag with decorative knotwork such as the triquetra. does anyone here knows how to do that?
