Whiistle Cleaning and Harshness

I reached for my car whistle the other day, a Waltons Mellow D. It sounded very harsh and scratchy. I took off the fipple, cleaned out the inside and then ran a napkin down through the tube. It didn’t have any visible material in the tube but when I played it then it was back to normal. This lead me to think that maybe it would be nice to polish the inside of the tube with a little cerium oxide or tin oxide polishing compound. Perhaps this would improve the sound even more than just a good cleaning. I have not tried this yet but I figured that some of you probably have. Has anyone tried this? Did it do any good?
