I think they’re pretty cool looking even WITH the plumbing code. I just have visions of busking with one and people thinking “Aw look…the poor thing can’t even afford a real pennywhistle, so she had to use plumbing pipe…and isn’t it neat the nice sounds she can get out of it” (or, if I play badly, “isn’t that sad”). It could be a real money earner! (which is a good thing, given that they’re a wee bit pricier than they look). Seriously, they’re neat whistles…I’ll probably add one to the bunch someday.

What do people put money in when you busk with a whistle (no case)?
One of the makers, I think it may have been Waltons, made a Sesame Street whistle, in D, brass with a yellow head and a sticker with the Sesame Street logo and a picture of Big Bird. To me, that’s the ultimate seedy - looking like you stole a child’s toy!
Well, there’s my “Scotty’s Whistle” that a friend gave me, painted blaze orange with an orange head and a black sticker with a little kilted characature on it.
But it would be hard to beat Paddy Maloney’s venerable generation D in Denver last year, which had several wraps of duct tape around the tube…
