was playing a Generation G whistle while walking down 2nd avenue in Manhattan this past Friday night? If I had not almost chocked on my dinner from the shock, I would have certainly caught up with you and said hi. Whatever tune you were playing sounded cool by the way.
My fingers are too wide for anything higher than E flat. Are you sure it wasn’t an F? Tom Dowling likes an F whistle and can sometimes be seen on the streets of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights. He’s a handsome, impish looking fellow with glasses and grey whiskers. And he knows a lot of cool tunes.
Don’t you boys know any nice songs?

It was not Tom, for I would have recognized his unique bird-like tone (not to mention Tom himself) even a block away. When Tom plays, it’s like there is a particularly melodious songbird in the room with you.
Alas, it was not me. I was filleting a fresh pineapple at the time of the crime. Thanks, however, to Jim M. (aka “Young Jim”) for omitting the adjective ‘rotund’ from his otherwise dead on description of yours truly. With respect to the effusive characterization of my amateurish play indicated by Matt (aka “Matt the Quick”), I can only assume he was still basking in the afterglow of a truly memorable meal and more than average wine cellar when he typed those words.
But here’s the deal: Matt & Jim–My house, next Monday (July 1), arrive anytime between 6:15 and 6:45 and we will butcher some tunes. I will also reach out to Heather and Steve. Any other takers in or around Brooklyn Heights?
Ok, so Amanderthad is Matt D? I get it now. Hi, Matt!
Tom, I’ll have to pass on Monday. I spent Saturday with David Bender and we played fifes for 7 hours straight! David is to teaching fife as Bill Ochs is to teaching whistle. It was a great day, but now I need to spend Monday with my kids.
