My dad is a great guy and I think I’m going to take him and get a kilt for him of our family colors. What I am looking for is a kilt maker in lower michigan or ontario closer to windsor the better. Please help me out here.
It would be nice if you could refer any by windsor.

thanks for the ideals but looking more on the lines of taking him to a kiltmaker/tailer setup. Using are family tartan. I looking for something hand made more expensive.
Isn’t there a fair-sized Irish music community around Windsor? Maybe someone at the sessions would know of a local shop.
that there is a good ideal I’m in michigan but no one around me knew of a good kiltmaker they wear generic kilt colors. And I have been told by some pipers you can sometimes find little old ladys in canada who create masterpieces. yes windsor has a great folk culture scene whether irish polish what have you it can be found.
Ah, more expensive! Why didn’t ye say so, lad? Then you should book yourself and him on a cruise ship to Ireland. Then hire the most expensive kiltmaker in Scotland to meet you on board and do the measuring and tayloring while on the cruise. Of course you’ll want the cast of Riverdance there as well, doing their show 3 times a day to give the cruise atmosphere, and Davey Spillane to play background music during each meal. Sorry, I was thinking small before.

Irishduffy try Canterbury Village, they have a shop called Highland Fling, it was my xwife’s favourite store. At one time she was going to have kilt made and went through all the fittings.

Oh, I just thought of it, I will ask Kit at the Kildare House tomorrow night, and see if he knows of any place, or anyone in the immediate area who makes kilts. Kit plays in the band the Tarten Army, and also was Drum Major for the Scottish Society Pipe Band in Windsor. He might have the knowledge.

for the buck.
Your two best sources for kilts in Canada are Tartantown in BC and Burnetts & Struth in Ontario. I have only just heard of Cannon Connections in Winnipeg but they have some good comments from customers on their website.
I haven’t worn a Burnetts & Struth kilt but I have worn two Tartantown kilts in pipe bands and they are excellent.

I am late to the discussion and can not offer direct help, but can offer a few comments. Kilts are made with five yards to eight yards of fabric. It is a good idea to find a local maker or fitter. Mail order is dicey because measurements are different for kilts. A man that wears, say a size 38 pants may or not fit in a kilt made to that spec. A quality kilt will cost several hundred dollars, with $1000 easily within reach. There are also the fixings, such as a sporran, a kilt belt, kilt socks, flashes, a skein-due (spelling?). These can add a substantial amount to the cost.
For those reading along that just want a kilt to wear once a year, and are on a tight budget can look at so-called sport kilts. These are a lot cheaper, and can be more comfortable in warm weather.
The kilt I own is a treasure. It was made in 1937, and was high quality for that time, all hand stitched, eight yards of wool, a beautiful and obscur red Sommerville tartan. Today, that kind of quality will cost dearly, but I lucked into my kilt several years agao at a thrift shop for $50. I did have to have it altered. Altering kilts is a specialty unto itself, and I would not trust a kilt to an average tailor. My kilt is on the long side because the prior owner was about six inches taller than me. Sadie hand makes kilts to measure, both Irish and Scottish. She is Irish and her husband is Scottish. She has made most of the kilts for the pipe bands on south Vancouver Island and many dancers etc. At present she is making an Irish dance dress for my granddaughter. If you want perfection check her out.
