…Rosaleen Macauley?

This afternoon (Sunday, 05 October) I was invited to a friends’ home to taken possession of some old 33.3 RPM records of various IRTrad musicians.

While there, he put a video on that was produced some 20-25 years ago by Rego Records. It was called “Irish Magic” and featured various traditional musicians.

In once scene, there’s a 16 - year old girl playing “The Shaskeen Reel” on the pipes. The host of the video production indicated that she was an All-Ireland champion on the pipes that same year.

I’d never heard of her before, and was wondering, what ever happened to her - does she still play the pipes, etc. - does anyone know?

Her playing was fantastic, by the way - it was easy to see why she’d be an All-Ireland champion.

Lots of kids drop out of music when they get older, especially the ones that have put a lot of time and effort into it when they were young. They do, however, carry forward with the study skills they learned in music.

A classic example is kids who are put through the Suzuki method. The drop-out rate is huge once they get into their mid to late teens (i.e. when they feel they are old enough to get away with it), but their grades are consistently higher, and their likelyhood to carry on to higher learning is much greater than most other kids.
