what will you do with a short cane tube

I recently started making reeds and bought a box full of cane from
Medir S.L.
The cane all came in the length of 15～18cm. After taking 10cm tube for
a concert pitch chanter reed, many tubes of less than 8cm are left.
What can I do with these? Is it usualy used to make a half length slip for one half of the reed head?

I understand you very well. I just received a shipment from Medir, and there’s a lot of undersized tubes. I would like to warn everybody if you are ordering from Medir to specify only tubes of a minimum 12-15 cm length, or you will end up in the same situation as Innerhand and me.

Yes, you can take two cuts from a short tube to make two halves of a slip, but it will be a lot of extra work and double-checking to make sure they are exactly the same thickness before you start your final gouge. You may still have problems, as the grain won’t be the same. There’s no way to guarantee that such a reed will behave well over time.

We have absolutely no guarantee that YOU’LL behave for 5 miutes, DJM, so you’ve got a lot of nerve complaining about reed cane. :slight_smile:

I’ll leave the peaces and keep them until my reed making skill improves.
I ordered them ‘at least 10cm in length’ this time. but It will be best if I can order about 20 or 22cm length ,but I have 3 kiros of canes, and they are for hudreds of reeds! :boggle:

I wouldn’t worry about wasteage (sp) from cane. You will find that even a perfect length tube will only yield up at best maybe 4 reeds. Warped cane, wonky grain, too soft, too hard etc., Use the spare leftovers to hone up your tool techniques.
