I have a very nice Low D old Chieftain I purchased from Boublebucklemonk here at Chiff & Fipple and Love it!!
But would like to get an a whistle some what higher pitch that I can play in the house without blowing out the windows! I have looked but can’t seem to find info on the sound difference between a C and D and Bb an F Etc Etc. (I am saying there are so many different Whistles) I don’t want 10 different ones to find out what I do want!
I no longer need a Low D and don’t want a soprano whistle! So what?
Not sure this makes any sense but I doubt I am the only one who has ever had this problem.
Any help will be appreciated!

Maybe you could find a local whistler?
Many have multiple whistles and you may not know what appeals to you without hearing it in person.
That said, since you dont want a low whistle or a saprono, maybe you’d like a Bd.
The Generation Bd is a good stock whistle that won’t break the bank, or you could spend more
for a Tweaked verision of the same.
Also, check out YouTube for vids of whistles in different keys.
Did you know that there are Saprono whistles that are voiced to be quite, and one with a volume control that
plays normal volume or very quite? Just a thought, as options.
BTW, did you ever get a decent flute, and hows that embrouchre coming along?
I think an alto F whistle would be the one, very sweet and not too loud. Aside from my low D the F is the next one the map.

I did get a nice old wooden Boosey 6key. It is beautiful to look at but a little hard to play!

Had to be said.
You say you don’t want a soprano, but you ought to consider a D if you ever intend to play at a session or other group setting. It’s by far the most useful whistle.

Well, that gives you the choice of every available model in every key from low Eb upwards…

Some are lower and often (but not always) warmer, others higher and often (but not always) cleaner/clearer (all depending on your definitions of warmer, cleaner and clearer!). And of course they also play in different keys.
I don’t want 10 different ones to find out what I do want!
But that’s exactly what’ll happen if you just order on the basis of a thread like this because there’s no way anyone here can tell you what you want!

Try anything/everything between till you find what you’re looking for. But be prepared to be frustrated (see brewerpaul’s reply) by having no D whistle at all.

As it stands (so what key do you need or does it really not matter?), I’m not sure it does either! But keeping the low D and getting both a high D and something in the middle range (say an F, G, A or Bb) makes a lot more to me.
You may want to begin your journey by moving upwards from Low D, but stay in the low range. A great way to do that is a whistle like a Reviol (great tone!) that uses the same head for Low F and Low G. These have different body lengths and different tones yet move you along in sampling, but economically. You can buy a Reviol Low G or F from Doc Jones (or another Chiffer) and order the extra body direct from Maurice. Or order one whistle and 2 bodies from Maurice.
If you want to skirt the border between low and soprano whistles I also highly recommend Freeman’s tweaked Bb and A.
If you want quieter soprano whistles just have Mack Hoover make what ever you want, specify on the quieter side.
As you can see by the responses this is a very difficult question to answer because it’s premise is false. Soprano whistles are not all prone to “blowing out the windows”. In fact, there is no correlation between key and loudness. I have many low whistles that can “blow out the windows”.
There is a tendency to believe that high D whistles are loud but as you’ve seen there are options and you will definitely be mistaken if you avoid playing a well constructed and tuned high D. This isn’t necessarily a function of cost but of design and production quality.
The loudest whistle I own is a Bb, next is an A, then low F, then a low D. All are louder than my loudest high D.
Perhaps you might revisit your original question before you acquire a low F, Bb, A or any other key that could indeed still “blow out the windows.”
It is also true that your skill as a player has a significant effect on this. Impossible to answer your original question.

There are absolutely no whistles that can ‘blow out the windows’ (unless you open the window and lean out to play)!

I was right it wasn’t written so one could understand! I have a very nice low D and at my ability level (beginner) when I play the second octave it is Loud! I mentioned the Soprano, not because I think it is too loud, but because I don’t think I want one “yet” !
I love the way those of you on Chiff &Fipple are willing to help!

I’d say get a B flat whistle.
You can find a tweaked generation on Jerry Freeman’s ebay.
Google “Freeman whistles” his ebay will pop up.
I’d say get one of his saprono ds while your at it.
BrewerPaul is right, you really should have at least one.
Freeman’s products are first rate whistles that are really good values.
To be clear, BrewerPaul didn’t recommend a Freeman whistle (at least not in this thread). He did recommend a high D whistle. There are many brands available - we all have our favourites.
Sorry for being less than clear.
