What type of whistles does John McCusker play?

I recently saw Kate Rusby in concert - what a talent.

The whole band are absolutely fantastic musicians, but one man stood above all others - John McCusker.

Apart from being a superlative fiddle player, he played several other instruments equally as well, including a wonderful sounding low whistle.

I think it was possibly the one in this picture:

Can anyone tell me what make it is?

John told me a few years ago, by email, he plays Chieftain and Overton, and said Michael Burke and Chris Abel were super whistle makers, so I could assume the whistle he’s playing there might be a Burke,
cheers, Amar.

Does John McCusker still have scary ugly hair like he did on that album cover? I kept thinking, if I were Kate Rusby, I’d not let my dearie do that to his head.

Hi all,

Saw Kate Rusby and band in Cambridge last night. Wonderful stuff and the band were rocking. Really surprised to see Brian Finnegan whistling in place of Mike McGoldrick, but they’re both my joint favourites anyway… Dual whistle stuff was absolutely amazing, particularly the tune sets they played and Courted a Sailor (with completely new and longer whistle sections).

John still has the funny hair but the spiky bits seem much shorter. His cittern playing was incredibly tight with Ian Carr’s guitar, and faultless fiddling. The two Andy’s (Seward/Cutting) played exceptionally as we would expect…!

John played Overtons in low D and Bb last night. Brian played flutes in D/Bb, an Olwell C bamboo flute, Overtons in high D, A, Bb, C and others, Kerry Pro low F.

Go see them if you have the chance!!
